Translation Committee Meeting in May 2005

Please be in prayer for the ESV Translation Oversight Committee (TOC), which will be meeting May 31 – June 4, 2005, to consider suggestions that have been made concerning the ESV text. The potential revisions are mostly minor punctuation and style issues.

At this time, the agenda for the meeting is full with items that have been under consideration over the past three years.

We have been collecting feedback ever since the ESV was first published in October 2001, and the TOC will be working through much of this feedback at the meeting. We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to write to us.

You’re always welcome to submit suggestions concerning the ESV text; however, any suggestions we’ve received recently won’t be considered at the coming meeting unless they’re already on the agenda. We do read every suggestion we receive.

We apologize for any miscommunication that led anyone to believe we were still accepting suggestions for the upcoming meeting.

Wayne Leman first mentioned the TOC meeting yesterday. If you’re interested in a lively debate over some of the translation choices the TOC has made, please head over to his site.

Thank you for praying for the TOC members during this time as they seek the Lord’s leading, with humility and reverence before God’s holy Word, and for His glory alone.

ESV Audio Update: Verses

Today we’re unveiling a big update to the audio New Testament at the ESV Online Edition. You can now listen to as little as a single verse at a time.

Previously you could only listen to complete chapters–if you wanted to hear, say, John 3:16-17, you had to listen to John 3:1-15 first. No longer: listen to John 3:16-17. Or maybe you want to hear the verses in the popular evangelistic tool The Romans Road? No problem.

You’ll see a “Listen” link whenever you’re browsing a passage in the New Testament. Follow the link to hear the verses. The Beatitudes are a good place to start.

Bible Gateway provides the bandwidth for the audio, so you’ll need a recent version of the free RealPlayer installed to access the files.

We listened to the entire audio New Testament and marked by hand where each verse begins and ends. We plan a technical writeup in the near future. Please email webmaster@gnpcb.org if you find any errors or have any problems.

Does this feature mean that Verse-of-the-day podcasts are coming soon? Yes it does–they’re coming Friday, May 6.
