See the ESV and Greek Side-by-side at Zhubert.com

Zack Hubert’s created a website that lets you compare the Greek text of the Bible with several English translations, including the ESV. You can hover over any Greek word to get its English definition as well as its tense, voice, mood, etc. Clicking the word gives you additional information.

He’s also developed a Flash-based interface that eliminates the need for page refreshes and provides a snappier response:

Other parts of the site let you create a translation of your own. And, of course, what modern Bible site is complete without a web service (this one for the Greek text of the Bible)? He even took the time to document what he’s done.)

Zack uses Crossway’s web service for the ESV text. His site is one type of application we hoped people would create when given access to the ESV text. Keep those ideas coming.

Of Trademarks

We’ve decided to pull the original version of this post, which plumbed the vagaries of trademark law, because it was just too dull.

Instead we’ll send you to Walter Snyder, who addresses the occasionally asked question of how a publisher can justify selling and holding a copyright on a translation of the Bible. He provides a good introduction to the issue.

How to Cite the ESV in Your Blog

A few months ago, Rebecca wrote us and asked how to cite the ESV in blog posts.

You can find the official answer on the ESV Copyright page (also in printed ESVs). A blog falls under the “non-saleable media” clause.

In a nutshell, here’s what to do:

Add the letters “ESV” after a quote from the ESV. We wouldn’t mind if you linked “ESV” to www.esv.org.

You can also link the verse reference to the passage in an online Bible (such as the ESV Online Edition or Bible Gateway) to help your readers get more context if they want:

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1, ESV)

We’ve mentioned a few plugins that can take care of some of this housekeeping for you.

Alternately, you can have a blanket statement on your blog saying that you quote from the ESV unless you mention otherwise. Blogger Adrian Warnock has posted some code to help you.

We’re not going to come after you if you don’t cite quotes from the ESV according to these guidelines. But we’d appreciate it if you did. Using the letters “ESV” also helps us track the popularity of the ESV in the blogosphere.
