Verbs in 1 John

Jason at Occupied with the Word writes about how the ESV translates verbs in 1 John:

I really enjoy the ESV’s correct translation of the Greek verbs in 1 John, specifically in regards to sin and righteousness. Most of the verbs speak of a continuous action, thus “practices righteousness” in 2:28, and “makes a practice of sinning” in 3:4, and “keeps on sinning” in 3:6, along with others in a similar vein. The ESV points out the important nuance of John’s grammar: he is addressing a regular, perpetual pattern in people (whether righteousness or sin).

He goes on to talk about some of the implications of the verb tenses John uses.

Presenting Bibles to Third-Graders

Zion Lutheran School of Kearney, Neb., every year presents Bibles to its third-graders. This year the students received ESV Bibles:

Zion Lutheran School of Kearney is now in its 77th year of operation, and has developed many wonderful traditions in that time. Two of these great traditions include the presentation of Bibles to the third graders, catechisms to the fifth graders, and the presentation of hymnals to seventh graders.

Mr. Splittgerber, the Head Teacher, had the honor of presenting the third graders with their very own Bibles last week. The students were very excited to receive their Bibles and learn about the features each book contained. Our students have been presented with a Concordia Edition of the Deluxe Reference ESV (English Standard Version)…. These Bibles will also be instrumental in the building of their faith and have reference features that will allow them to grow in their Biblical prowess for years to come.
