Verbs in 1 John

Jason at Occupied with the Word writes about how the ESV translates verbs in 1 John:

I really enjoy the ESV’s correct translation of the Greek verbs in 1 John, specifically in regards to sin and righteousness. Most of the verbs speak of a continuous action, thus “practices righteousness” in 2:28, and “makes a practice of sinning” in 3:4, and “keeps on sinning” in 3:6, along with others in a similar vein. The ESV points out the important nuance of John’s grammar: he is addressing a regular, perpetual pattern in people (whether righteousness or sin).

He goes on to talk about some of the implications of the verb tenses John uses.
