Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches

9781581349115

In the recently released Adopted for Life, Moore expounds the theological truths of adoption, calling churches and believers to see the ministry of adoption as more than a charity or a metaphor, but an essential priority in reaching the world for Christ. This book is a call to action and a plea for Christians to be at the forefront of the adoption of orphans in North America and around the world.

Tim Challies writes:

When watching sports you sometimes hear a coach tell his players to “leave it all on the field (or on the court or on the diamond).” This coach expects his players to give it their best effort, to walk into the locker room at the end of the day knowing that they could not have done any better. And I really felt this is what Moore did here; I felt like he put a lot of himself into this book, that it took a lot out of him to write it, and that it really does represent a passionate effort on his part. And it shows. The book perfectly combines the theological foundation with the practical outworking of that theology. It has wisdom for the adopter, the adopted and the families, friends and churches of both. It is undoubtedly one of the best books I’ve read this year. I hope you’ll consider reading it too.

Bruce Ware Brings the Seminary Classroom to the Home

Russell Moore, author of Adopted for Life, posted a review of Bruce Ware’s new book Big Truths for Young Hearts. Moore writes:

“My favorite part . . . is the foreword. The foreword is written by Bethany Strachan and Rachel Ware, the daughters of Bruce and Jodi Ware. I teared up as I read their words about their Dad. They talked about how Bruce would teach them as they grew up, sometimes by singing hymns, sometimes as they drove along on trips, sometimes on one-on-one dinners together. They write: ‘Dad really believes the things that are in this book.’

They further write: ‘To parents: it may sound cliche, but we followed our father’s teaching in part because he practiced what he preached.’

Moments after I read those words, I said, through tears, to a friend in a similar context: ‘Oh, how I pray one day our children could write words about loving and following the same gospel we’ve preached and taught.’”

The Controversial and Influential John Calvin

9781433501326

Join Dr. Robert Godfrey and Paul Edwards as they discuss the recently released John Calvin: Pilgrim and Pastor live from Alistair Begg’s Basics Conference for Pastors today at 5:05pm EST. Listen here.

July 10, 2009, marks the five-hundredth anniversary of the birth of John Calvin. Both controversial and influential, his critics label him judgmental and joyless while his admirers celebrate him as an influential theologian of Reformed Christianity. His impact is unmistakable—a primary developer of Western Civilization whose life and work have deeply affected five centuries of pastors, scholars, and individuals. John Calvin: Pilgrim and Pastor is an introduction to Calvin’s life and thought and essence. Here is a man who moved people not through the power of personality, but through passion for the Word of God.

W. Robert Godfrey is the president of Westminster Seminary California and longtime professor of church history.

Listening and Pausing Online Audio

The following audio tip is for the ESV Online Study Bible, although it works even if you haven’t registered for the full Online Study Bible. That is to say, anyone can access the full ESV text and audio from the Online Study Bible website.

(If you have a print edition of the ESV Study Bible you can enter your registration code for full access here. You also have the option to purchase online access for the notes and other Study Bible features.)

Listen to the ESV Audio

As long as your browser supports Flash and you have speakers, you can simply click “Listen” at the top of the screen (see above). The audio will start at the beginning of your selected passage.

Shortcut for Pausing

Once the audio is playing and fully loaded (the scrolling dots go away and the controller appears—this may take a while depending on the length of the passage), hitting TAB and then SPACE (alternately, not together) will pause the audio. Hitting TAB and then SPACE again will resume. If this doesn’t work, try pausing the audio with the mouse, to make sure the flash object is selected on the page. You can then scroll the page as you wish, using TAB-then-SPACE to pause and resume the audio at will.

Note: This also works on the ESV site.
