Retirement is a hot button issue today and can be a source of great anxiety when 401 k and investment plans dwindle. Many may be tempted to assume retirement is a reward for their years of labor and to view the final seasons of life as a time to “take it easy.”
John Piper responds, “Lord, spare me this curse!” Living and dying to make Christ look glorious means living and dying in a way that shows Christ to be the all-satisfying treasure that he is. When satisfied with all that God promises to be for us in Christ, we are set free from the cravings that lead to so much emptiness and uselessness in retirement. The world’s suggestions for retirement call us to live in a way that would make this world look like our treasure. And when that happens, Jesus is belittled.
In Rethinking Retirement: Finishing Life for the Glory of Christ, John Piper challenges fellow baby boomers to forgo the American dream of retirement and live out their golden years in a way that makes Christ look glorious.
