What Parents Are Saying About “What He Must Be”

Crossway’s homeschool book reviewers recently looked at What He Must Be . . . If He Wants to Marry My Daughter. This compelling apologetic of biblical manhood serves as valuable follow up to Voddie Baucham’s popular book, Family Driven Faith. By studying the principles outlined in his book, parents who want their daughters to marry godly men and their sons to become godly men will be well equipped to help their children seek and develop God-honoring qualities.

Here’s a great story from one of the reviewers:

“When I received the book for review, I immediately thought this was a book for Brian [husband] to read. Brian is not much of a reader (actually, he’s not a reader at all, unless he’s reading something to do with the dirt-track races or something written by Glenn Beck). So, when he told me there was a new Glenn Beck book out and that I could buy it at Amazon.com, I thought to myself, ‘hmm…this might just work…’

I ordered the book he wanted, but I gave it to him with an ultimatum . . . first, before he could read that book, he needed to read this one by Voddie Baucham, and let me know his thoughts on it. I didn’t think he would take me seriously, but HE DID! I noticed the book was missing; he was taking it along to work to read on his breaks. Each night, when he’s come home, I noticed the bookmark rapidly working it’s way through the book!

Brian started telling us things about the book—things he was reading and agreeing with, ideas that Mr. Baucham presents, etc. A few times, he even handed me the book and said, ‘hey, you have to read this!’ When it was all said and done, he said he’d like for me to read this book soon.”

  1. It seems there is a lot of focus on Biblical manhood (bravo!) these days, but are there books for young women to read in order to become the person that a Godly man would find desirable?
It seems Baucham makes an assumption that his daughter is such a catch that the standard for the man who pursues her would be sky-high - what has she been doing to prepare herself to be a bride and a Godly wife?

  2. Hey Kate,

There are some good books about Godly womanhood. One of the best ones available is a book called, “So Much More”. You can get it and watch the documentary, “Return of the Daughters”. These are two stapes in my home.

  3. Stephen,

Thank you for the book and DVD recommendations. Plan to get both soon. My wife and I both read Baucham’s book and loved it. As the father of my own wonderful daughter, I intend to read the book many times.

  5. Kate, do you know any Christian man who thinks so little of his daughter that he doesn’t care what scum she marries? Our daughters should have biblically high standards for the man they marry because they are Christians, not because they are a “great catch”.
I loved this book. I will recommend it for my son to read when he is a bit older, and the single men in my church, and the dads of daughters in our church, . . . It has a broad audience base.

  6. Who is the author of the book “So Much More”?

  7. The book “So Much More” was written by Anna Sofia and Elizabeth Botkin. Their website is: http://visionarydaughters.com/.

  8. I would like to read the book as well. In fact, I ordered two copies from the website (VBM) , it has been well over a week and has yet to arrive.
