Bible Translations and the Case for an Essentially Literal Approach

Leland Ryken will be answering some timely questions on Bible translation starting tomorrow on the Crossway Blog.

Dr. Ryken’s new book, Understanding the English Bible Translation: The Case for an Essentially Literal Approach arrived at Crossway’s offices the same day that Fox News and USA Today featured articles on Bible translations and revisions.

Ryken has been professor of English at Wheaton College since 1968 and has written thirty books, including Choosing a Bible (which you can read online in full) and The Word of God in English. He also served as literary stylist for the ESV and as coeditor of the ESV Literary Study Bible.

Bible Translations and the Case for an Essentially Literal Approach

9781433502798What are the differences between Bible translations? How should one choose a translation? How do you know if a translation is accurate? Leland Ryken’s new book, Understanding the English Bible Translation: The Case for an Essentially Literal Approach hit the Crossway warehouse on the same day that Fox News and USA Today featured articles on Bible translations and revisions.

Taking into account the latest developments in Bible translation, Ryken clarifies the issues that underlie modern Bible translation and makes a strong case for an essentially literal approach.

Leland Ryken agreed to answer a few timely questions for us on the blog this week. Join us here tomorrow for his Q&A.

Choose the Cover for “Run to Win the Prize” by Tom Schreiner

We’re pleased to announce Tom Schreiner’s upcoming book, Run to Win the Prize: Perseverance in the New Testament (May 2010). Here’s a brief description:

This important work on the doctrine of perseverance examines Scripture’s warnings and exhortations and their purpose in salvation.

Scripture’s commands to persevere, and warnings of the consequences if we fail, have been met with apathy by some, and led others to doubt their salvation. The fearful and eternal nature of these issues warrants a careful examination of what the Bible says about perseverance. Thomas Schreiner tackles this difficult topic in Run to Win the Prize. Clarifying misunderstandings stemming from his more detailed treatment in The Race Set Before Us (IVP 2001), Schreiner details how God directs the collective warnings and exhortations of Scripture toward believers as a means of preservation. We are to think of the call to persevere in light of the initial call to faith, both agents by which God leads us to final salvation.

We look forward to the release of Run to Win the Prize this spring. In the meantime, we’d like to get your input on the cover, so please vote and tell us what you think.

Store to Double Customers’ Share the Good News of Christmas Orders

The Good Shepherd Christian Book & Gift Shoppe in Newark, New Jersey, plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the store this December by doubling customers’ purchases of Crossway’s Share the Good News of Christmas gift bags. For every carton purchased, Good Shepherd will provide another carton for free.

The store’s owner, Karen Wilson, had been praying about something to mark the store’s anniversary that was different from the typical promotion—having a sale or hosting an author or artist in the store. She sensed God was leading her to do something that would be an outreach to people in her community. Then she read about Share the Good News of Christmas in World Magazine and thought, “This is it!” Wilson liked the whole package—that it can be personalized, and that it includes a Bible, a gospel tract, and an invitation to a church or ministry event.

Wilson is seeking to use every promotional vehicle available to get the word out about Share the Good News of Christmas. Wilson and her event coordinators sat down and made a list of eighty churches in the area that they plan to both personally call and follow up with a letter. “In most cases, we aren’t contacting the pastor, but people we know who are in positions in the church to get things done,” said Wilson.

She is sharing her personal excitement with customers who visit her store, promoting it on her phone answering machine, displaying sample bags in the store, downloading the postcard art from CBA’s website to print and distribute to her mailing list, and preparing ads for local newspapers and radio. She also ordered sample kits to have in the store to give away to potential customers.

“Because I’m excited about this, my customers are getting excited about it! We’re making an all-out effort to get churches, as well as individual customers, to tell us how many cartons of kits they want to purchase so we can place our complete order with Crossway by October 15th.”

“In the past we’ve celebrated our store’s anniversary with special sales and having artists or authors in the store,” said Wilson. “But this year will be different—this year we’ll be sharing the Good News of Christmas!”
