9781433502415We’re excited to feature the ESV Study Bible on Trackback Thursday! Please read on as we’re doing things a bit differently this week. 1. I pre-ordered my ESV Study Bible and waited not so patiently for it to arrive. It is an excellent study aid. The articles provide needed background to help understand the environment from the time the various books of the Bible were written.

I’ve purchased copies for friends and families and would love to have a second copy for reference at work.

  2. I love to read my bible in the living room on the couch from when my husband goes to work until the kids wake up. This is my favorite time of the day.

  3. my favorite bible verses are too numerous to mention! LOL
My life verse is Psalm 119:139 “Direct my steps in thy word and let no iniquity have dominion over me.”

  4. I manage our church bookstore and we have sold over 250 of the ESV Study Bible. The “free bible” sales incentive for staff last fall created a lot of excitement here and several were awarded. Thank you for that! Just this week, a staff member (who earned multiple copies) was able to give one of hers to someone who did not own a bible. They were both blessed beyond words.

  5. I’d love to win one of these, my daughter needs a new Bible, she is ready for a nice leather Bible now ;)

    tweet away…

ESV Study Bible is great, thx for the hard work (I’ve bought several electronic licenses already)

  6. I have 2 ESV Bibles. I want to win another one b/c I would love to regift it to my mom for christmas. The one I do most of my personal bible study out of the hardcover one (like the one pictured in this post). I also have a trutone blue one with ivy, thinline.
I would, if I won one, want the bonded leather black.

  7. I love my ESV Study Bible because of its comprehensive coverage of practically every relevant issue that one can think of. It is fair in its portrayal of opposing points of view and it holds a high view of Scripture, doctrine, and of Christ. It is a Bible for Bible believing people.
Although I already own an ESV Study Bible, I wish to win an ESV Study Bible simply for the purpose of sharing it with another person who does not have one.

  8. I actually have never owned an ESV Bible, but as a mother of several small children, I think this would be a great home school tool - not just for home school, but for discipleship. After all, I believe home school begins with discipleship.

  9. I’d like to win an ESVSB as I prepare a twice-weekly Bible study in the Book of Romans with my friends over the Web, and it would be awesome to have such a wealth of resources at my fingertips as I prepare to teach God’s Word.

  10. I’d like to win an ESVSB because I’ve kind of reached critical mass in my home with other versions of the ESV. Reformation Study Bible, Literary Study Bible, readers version of the ESV, ESV in Accordance… You get the picture. I’d love to have the ESVSB but don’t think I can convince my finances to support another study Bible. I could really use the notes as my family is part of a church planting team and we’ll be leading small groups. Nice to have quick and reliable answers handy!

  11. One of my favourite Biblical verses is Romans 11:33-36:

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” 36For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

  12. I would like to win the ESV Study Bible. I pre-ordered one, then sold it to a friend for a fraction of what I paid for it. I’ve been using the online version, but it isn’t very portable. Thank you for making these offers.

  13. I love the ESV and purchased the ESVSB when it became available. I also have it electronically in both Logos (on my windows laptop) and in Laridian Pocket Bible (on my iPhone) and just this week started to use it with Logos on my iPhone. I prefer the electronic version as it is always with me and easy to access. I find it interesting that some of the pastors at church who use the NASB will rephrase a verse and the rephrase is identical to the ESV.

  14. One of my favorite verses is “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 1:7

  15. I have been tremendously blessed by a number of ESVSB articles that have been made available for free online, so I would love to have my own hard copy of this incredible resource.

  16. Would love an ESVSB. Thanks.

  17. Jonathan Griffiths

I picked up a copy of the ESVSB just after it was released and it has been my daily companion in seeking to meet with God. It would be sweet to win another one to give as a gift, because this really is the best study bible I’ve ever had.

  18. My wife has been looking for a nice bible to read at home. I’ve been looking at one of the trutone or leather ESV study bibles to buy, but if I could win one, that’d be dandy too. :)

  19. I would really like to win an ESV study bible to help me know and understand the truths of scripture better so that I can then communicate those truths my wife and 4 children during our family reading time.

  20. The only thing I’d change is to fix some of they print…I have a couple chapters of Romans that are blurry and hard to read.

The color maps and diagrams in the text are great…much easier to use than b/w line drawings.

  21. I have the ESV Study Bible on my Palm. I’d love to win a “hard copy” for reading and studying.

  22. Doc B - Could you shoot me an email at facebook@crossway.org with your shipping info and reiterate the description of the defect? Thanks!

  23. Seems a bit awkward to bless those who already have one with another copy.. I’d love to win one, ’cause I don’t already have one, cause I can’t really afford it. I understand it’s a great resource.

  24. Last night at the weekly Bible study I lead all the guys had the ESV. The group consists of military guys and seminary students. I can’t think of a more potent group of men to introduce to the ESV Study Bible!

  25. I’d like to win one because I had an ESV bible (not the SB) that has its spine torn.

  26. I had waited literally for YEARS for a plain ESV Study Bible to come out… when I found out I could preorder this one, I ordered it in hardback and and picked it up the day it came out at the store! I had already read all the way through the Gospel of John via a sample I had gotten previously, and I was STOKED! And it does not disappoint. I’ve read completely through several books of the Bible in the ESVSB, and it brings whole new dimensions to your knowledge of the text. The illustrations are terrific. I love that it uses the updated ESV (are there any other ESV editions that use it?) The online version has become my primary source when looking up verses on the go. It’s just an all-around great Bible to have and use! I would love to have a leather one to take with me to church… the hardback one is not particularly comfortable to carry around, although I love it for using at home.

  27. I read the ESV on Kindle on my iPhone - I love having it with me all the time! But oh, what I would give to have my own ESV Study Bible!

  28. As a different Study Bible publisher alluded, the ESVSB could lose some weight. 8-)

  29. I would love to win an ESVSB!! I’ve been longing for it since before it was released, but I don’t have the finances to buy one. I treasure and cherish the Word of God, and I love learning more about what the Bible says and what it means. I crave the theological depth presented in the notes and articles in the ESVSB.

  30. My Dad’s favorite verse when he was dying in 1998 was Psalm 30:5:

For his anger is but for a moment,
and his favor is for a lifetime.
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.

This brought him a lot of comfort during his final days. We miss John, and can’t wait to see him again in heaven!

  31. The BEST study Bible ever!! Seems like more and more folks at my church are getting one. We have two copies in my family at present. Trying to get others to buy one.

  32. It’s a truly great translation with tons of worthy study notes and awesome graphics and maps. I feel blessed to own one (a Christmas gift last year) and would happily pass on another to someone who needs a good study Bible. I have several possibilities already in mind.

  33. I would love to win one of these to have on hand as a gift or give to someone who is a new christian. My husband bought me one last year and wrote in the front of it that he gave it to me out of our mutual love for God’s Word. As I read and study I am reminded how much God loves me which makes me more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. I want His Holy Word to fill my heart and mind so that I will think God’s thoughts and be conformed to the image and character of Jesus. I want to be a better lover of Jesus, better teacher of His Word to those who long to know God and His Word.

  34. Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the LORD:
“Stand by the roads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk with in it.’”
ESVSB note - 6:16 the ancient paths. The way of faithfulness revealed to Moses and the earlier prophets.
the good way. The proper life of faith-driven obedience.
walk. A metaphor for patterned living (cf. Ps. 1:1).
We will not walk - describes strong rebellion against revealed truth.
    Amen.

  35. I love reading my ESV Bible to my family during our nightly family worship.

  36. Congrats John Seaton! You’re our first winner. Email your shipping info and which edition you would prefer to faceboook@crossway.org. Thanks all for participating! We have 6 more!

  37. I would love to win an ESV Study Bible because frankly, it is the best Bible out there. I am a biblical counselor at my church and this Bible would greatly benefit me as a disciple my counselee’s in their walk with the Lord, as well to assist with my own spiritual growth.

  38. I was able to convince several of my church members to pre-order the ESVSB last year, and every one of them has told me that it has become their favorite Bible. My wife began to wonder why we only had one, so I bought her one for her birthday, and she tells me that it was the best present I have ever given her.

Should I win one, I will give it away to one of my members.

  39. I’ve been reading 1 John lately. My favorite verse is:

1John 4:10: In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

  40. 2009 Bible of the year. It’s always fun to be a winner.

  41. I have never owned a study Bible of any kind, but I know several people who own this particular one. It looks really good!! There are many times I would appreciate the ESVSB to refer to when preparing for Bible Study.

  42. One thing I’d do to the study Bible is a release a “Reader’s Edition” - abbreviated form of the notes, larger typeset and all the additional materials (like the articles, full notes, etc) on an accompanying CD…

  43. After being a KJ only, although I never used those words, it was just that KJ was the only version I read from the age of 6 or so until the year 2000 and then I started reading other versions. Then my son-in-law posted about the ESV web site and at the time I was living overseas as part of our mission organization and web sites were very important, I began reading and listening to the ESV. On leave in 2007 I purchased my first ESV and since have purchased many as gifts. I do believe this is the “new” KJ of the 21st century.

  44. I love the ESV Study Bible because its relentlessly evangelical scholarship and valiant pursuit of truth. Christian publishing all to often is filled with little more than pablum (often on the best seller lists) and the ESV Study Bible represents a departure from this trend with its top notch scholarship and commitment to substantive teaching. It shows that Crossway is more committed to truth than to sales. I pre-ordered mine (calf-skin edition) and eagerly anticipated its arrival. Since I received it I have used it every day and have given several as gifts… I cannot think of any gift better! I was also thriller when I saw that it was a best seller. May God continue to use this invaluable resource! The church is in-debt for this magnificent contribution.

  45. The reason I would like to win one is to give it as a gift.

  46. I would also like to see the ESV Study Bible translated into many other languages. I have heard of many pastors in foreign countries whose only resource is the Bible that they own. If we could get ESV Study Bibles into their hands what a blessing to God’s church would it be!

  47. I would love to give an ESVSB to my sister who is off at University in Waterloo, ON. I know she will be bombarded with many opinions on Christianity and the Bible both from within the Church and from without. I think the ESVSB would be excellent in grounding her in Scripture and providing a reliable guide in a sea of “opinions” on what the bible means. I have a young family and just don’t have the discretionary income to get her an ESVSB right now. Thank you all for your wonderful publishing ministry. - Eric

  48. In addition to the awesome content inside the ESVSB, I would point at that the book itself is well done. Even the hardback is Smyth-sewn and the paper is an excellent quality. In a Bible this big, I guess it has to be durable - the message certainly is!

  49. I enjoy the ESVSB dureing my sermon prep time but the internet addition I use quite often as a great study aid. I look forward to more time each week with the study Bible.

  50. I would like to win one, because I have been praying for months now that I would get a chance to have a free copy that Bible with its excellent commentary.

  51. I’d like to have one to give to my wife. She is a bit envious of mine!

  52. Congrats to @revtubb, our Friday winner!

  53. [...] Continues! We will be giving away a new ESV Study Bible every day through Wednesday 11/11/09. Here’s a reminder on how the contest works. As folks continue commenting into next week, we would like to see facebook, twitter, and the blog [...]

  54. In reading Leland Ryken’s book Understanding English Bible Translation he makes it clear right off where he stands on translations and why, by page 32 he states he consultes ESV 1st. I’ve never been a fan of NIV and would just about come unglued when someone in the pulpit recommended NIV. So knowledge is giving us lay folks a better understanding why we need a word for word translation which the ESV does so beautiful. Another Ryken’s quote “a reader ought to be able to trust a translation to give us an English version of what the original author wrote”. Also when I discuss Bible translations with others I always note how a word for word vs thought for thought vs paraphase translations differ.

  55. I just started going to the young adults small group from my church a couple weeks ago. I have been taking my ESV reference Bible and I think it would be really awesome to have the study Bible to help with understanding what is being said in the scriptures.

As my favorite Bible verse… I would have to say Psalm 103: 11-12
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

It just reminds me that God has erased all my past sins… as far as the east is from the west.

  56. Congrats to “brian,” our trackback winner for Saturday! Please email your shipping info and preferred edition to twitter@crossway.org or facebook@crossway.org.

  57. [...] The Trackback Thursday Contest Continues! We will be giving away a new ESV Study Bible every day through Wednesday 11/11/09. Here’s a reminder on how the contest works. [...]

  58. Absolutely love my ESV. My favorite verse that has gotten me through so many trails in my life is II Corinthians 1:3-7.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.

  59. Congrats to Douglas K. Adu-Boahen, our Sunday trackback winner! Please email your shipping info and preferred edition to twitter@crossway.org or facebook@crossway.org

  60. [...] The Trackback Thursday Contest Continues! We will be giving away a new ESV Study Bible every day through Wednesday 11/11/09. Here’s a reminder on how the contest works. [...]

  61. My wife just started reading the ESV this year. I would love to give her very own ESV Study Bible so she can use it to grow in the grace of Jesus. The ESV Study Bible has helped me grow in understanding the Bible more deeply than any other study Bible and would love the same for her.

  62. My sister just got baptised and as she is still very young in the faith I’d like to win a copy of the ESV Study Bible so that I can give it to her as a gift to encourage her in the faith. The ESV Study Bible has been an amazing study tool for me and I would love to share this with her.

  63. I am a church planter working in a community that is less than 3% Christian. Having an ESV Study Bible would give me one more tool to help equip me to reach the lost in my area. As a church planter, my budget is very slim, so receiving free resources allow me to dedicate my funds to other important evangelistic projects. Thanks, Crossway, for your excellent resources.

  64. I would love to have one of these!

  65. I would love to have an ESV Study Bible. We do not have this version at home and I think it would be a nice addition to our house.

  66. I would still like to give an ESVSB to my sister. What a great resource. - Eric

  67. I would love to win an ESVSB for my husband!!! His current ESV - well, let’s just say the cover is TOTALLY off of the Bible and he really needs a new one! We purchased an ESVSB for our 13 yr old son and I noticed how much my hubby likes it!! His birthday is THIS MONTH!! So it would be a perfect fit!! Laurie

  68. I have not had the chance to read the ESV study bible but I love the translation. Many of the pastors and teachers I follow teach from the ESV translation so I want to make tha switch. I help teach an online study guys in their teens and twentys but don’t own a stud bible, this is much needed.

    thanks // bless

    drew

  69. Thank you for a chance to win a ESVB! I’ve been looking at Erik Kowalker’s photos of his ESVBs for the past couple of days with unChristian envy.

My favorite verse is John 16:33:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Every time I’ve felt despair, I’ve turned to those words of comfort. There is no adversity that we should face without hope because Jesus has taken all our fears and failures upon himself and conquered them. Only Christ could forgive the sins of another, and only Christ could tell another not to be anxious because He has conquered all our anxiety in his love for us. For any other man, what hubris it would be! “…IN ME you will have peace.” What a wonderful blessing for us all!

  70. I should have added to my earlier post on the ESVSB raffle the following:

Reason I’d love to own this version: Yes, I want one because it has won awards, and yes, I want one because my best friend has recommended this translation, and yes, I want one because there’s an list of accomplished theologians who labored on it. But really, when you get down to it, I want one because I love books and this book of books is soooooooo cool.

Suggestion for next edition: Since the study bible is by nature larger than a Scripture-only bible, I guess I can get away with suggesting the following addition that I’d love to see in a future version– exegesis. A page or two of exegesis of selected passages done by various theologians. It would be wonderful to take a passage, such as Romans 4:1-12, and see how a theologian who contributed to the translation would expound upon those verses. Maybe provide 10 or more such exegeses culled from various books throughout the bible?

    Thanks!

  71. I would love to give one to my mom. She has started to really hunger for God and learn more about Him in this past year. I know the ESVSB will really help her.

  72. I am a freshman in college and I would love to win a ESV Study Bible. Being a freshman in college I am unable to purchase one on my own and it would be a great Christmas present to myself :)

  73. Congrats to Kathy Cozonac - our Trackback winner for Monday (from Facebook)

  74. [...] The Trackback Thursday Contest Continues! We will be giving away a new ESV Study Bible every day through Wednesday 11/11/09. Here’s a reminder on how the contest works. [...]

  75. Another suggestion for the ESVSB marketing campaign. Don’t apologize for the 4-4.7 lb weight. Market that tome! How about…..

“The ESVSB: The Bible that would make Karl Barth sweat.”

Or simply the following to the facing title page:

    Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

I’d accent the size of the ESV Study Bible, not shy away from it.

  76. Congrats to our college freshman! Amanda, please email your shipping address and preferred edition to facebook@crossway.org.

  77. [...] The Trackback Thursday Contest Continues! We will be giving away a new ESV Study Bible every day through Wednesday 11/11/09. Here’s a reminder on how the contest works. [...]

  78. I had a ESV bible but lost it. I was putting my son in his car seat, placed my bible on top of the car and forgot it was there. While driving I saw something red fly off my car. My bible was red. Later the next day was looking for it and remembered the flying red thing from my car. Argh!
Would like a replacement ESV for its accuracy to the orginal text
    Thank you

  79. I find the online version really helpful - works nicely on the iphone too! (and it’s not so heavy to carry…!)

  80. Final day, final reason I’d like to win the ESVSB: Someone once wrote in the cover of a bible, “This bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this bible.”

I’m excited about this study bible–if it keeps me returning to the Word over and over I’ll consider myself fortunate indeed!

Thanks for the opportunity to win a bible, Crossway!

  81. On of my favorite verses:

    2 Corinthians 12:9

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Thanks for this sweet contest, you should run it all year long. :)

  82. I have been incredibly blessed in the past year to have the study tool that is my ESV Study Bible. Since, I have encouraged many others in my surroundings to make the investment and to take a bigger step in diving into God’s Word deeper. I would love a chance to win an ESV Study Bible so that I can give it to my brother for Christmas. He is in his second to last year of high school and has become a leader in many areas. I fear that he does not dive into the Word enough and that he does not have a Bible that will help fully equip him for the ministry he’s in now and the potential ministry that lies ahead. I feel that one of the best ways we can further God’s kingdom and pass along this great tool we’ve all come to love is to begin giving it to the next generation. Thanks for the opportunity.

  83. I’ve been using the ESV as my primary translation for a couple of years now. I couldn’t wait for the ‘official’ ESV Study Bible and purchased the Reformation Study Bible ESV translation a year or so ago. I am still considering getting the ESV Study Bible as well.

    Good work on the translation.

  84. “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

I love God’s Word. This is my life verse because it so plainly states our salvation and how we should live out our lives to the glory of God.

  85. I had a hardcover ESV Study Bible. A friend of my wife and i actually had her ESVSB stolen (can you believe that!). Because i knew how great of study tool it was and what she would be missing, we gave her mine. I would love to win a new one!

  86. First of all, I have an ESV Study Bible, it is my second. My first, which I purchased early this year got me through some very tough trials and problems. While reading through it, I discovered that a span of about 7 pages were double strike printed and blurry. I contacted customer service who promptly sent me a replacement. So, in addition to the wonderful features of the ESVSB, your service has made me a loyal customer for life.

I would like to win another ESVSB so I can give it as a gift.

    Tom

  87. I have found the ESV to be the most gender accurate, especially in the New Testament.

  88. The scholarship is a major draw for me. Having the input of so many respected authors and teachers makes dependable resource.

  89. One of my favorite passages.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
    Ps 19:1-2

Thank you for having this contest.

  90. I have been off work on permanent disability, and pretty much house bond since 2005…this means especially that over the last couple of years my ability to attend mid-week bible house group is sporadic to non-existant. I went and bought myself a ESV Bible upon the recommendation and viewing my boyfriend’s bible, which I found awesone. To have a copy of the ESV Study Bible would help me grow in the word, especially since I’m unable to attend my weekly bible study group.

I appreciate what you are doing to get God’s word into His childrens’ hands.

    Beverley

  91. One of the most important verses to me is found in Acts 17:28, ever since I became a Christian back in 1979. On that special day of my baptism when I went under the frigid, clear, blue waters of the Tasman Sea just off the west coast of New Zealand (South Island), and after I gave my testimony on the sandy beach a NASB was given to me. Apparently, a woman in Christchurch, east coast, was told to give one of the itinerant preachers a bible to take to a person who needed a bible where he was going, so much joy to discover God’s provision for me in this timely way…a baptism gift from my heavenly Father!

I “retired” this Bible (daughter has asked for it as an early heirloom), because it is so worn out - pages falling out, spine broken, etc. - from use, that I didn’t want it to deteriorate any further. But I really loved using that version, ’cause it flowed with such beautiful language, and yet most times was easily understood. This is why when, I was introduced to the ESV Bible I was so delighted, and thrilled. The versions are very similar, and yet I find that the ESV is even more clearer, without loosing the beautiful flow of language!

I’d like to use Acts 17: 28 to illustrate this:

“…for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His offspring.’ ” NASB

“…for in Him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ ” ESV

“For we are indeed his offspring.”; that sentence is so beautiful, and incredible. It would be such a blessing and joy to be gifted an ESV Study Bible.

Oh yeah, I haven’t shared why Acts 17:28 means so much to me…since we [meaning myself/I], live and move and have our [my] being in Him [God], I have nothing to fear, because God can see what I am doing at all times, all of me is laid bear before Him; my motives, my thoughts, etc. I found this as a new Christian to be very freeing/liberating, that no darkness, or sin could go un-noticed for long before Him. I found this knowledge gave me a great sense of security and peace, and it still does this twentysomething years later.
    Blessings, Beverley
