ESV Study Bibles in Eger Hungary

84Last spring, Wayne Grudem’s adult Sunday School class at Scottsdale Bible Church (and one other class) donated 654 ESV Study Bibles to be distributed to European Christian leaders from over 40 countries at the European Leadership Forum in Eger, Hungary, May 23-28, 2009. “These European leaders were thrilled to receive such an up-to-date, practical, comprehensive resource to help them in their various ministries,” said Grudem.

Mike Vezzetti (Distribution Manager), Tim Hoffer (Assistant Distribution Manager), and Kay Olsen (Supervisor of Sales and Media Services) arranged for the shipment of 654 ESV Study Bibles to Hungary.

Biblical Leadership Training in Sierra Leone

90Brian Main, pastor of Cross Point Bible Fellowship in Vienna, OH traveled to Bo, Sierra Leone to help train pastors at the Global Leadership Institute from October 5-15, 2009. Twenty-five pastors from Sierra Leone (16), Liberia (8), and Ivory Coast (1) attended the inaugural GLI.

The GLI was developed by Dr. John Thompson, pastor of All Nations Fellowship of Tulsa, OK, and Rev. Gregory Bangura, founder and president of Rabboni Missions International. Their purpose is to provide biblical and leadership training to pastors to support and encourage church planting not only in the countries from which the participants came, but also throughout Muslim-dominated West and North Africa. The three American pastors will provide instruction for the initial cohort of 25 pastors for two weeks a year for three years. A new cohort of 25 will be started each year with those cohorts being instructed exclusively by the previously trained African participants in the GLI.

“Bible study and reference materials are not easily accessible in Sierra Leone and other similar locations. In fact, as we met with the head of military chaplains for the Sierra Leonean military, we were told that the need for good study Bibles there is ‘very, very serious,’” Main explained. “So we were glad that as we had considered what kind of resources we would like to place into the hands of the GLI participants, our first choice had been the ESV Study Bible.”

Each of the 25 pastors who attended this year’s GLI received a free Tru-Tone ESV Study Bible. “Even though they had yet to realize the wealth of resources that had been combined in this one volume, their eyes lit up as they received their Bible and began to page through them,” Main continued. “We are confident that the ESV Study Bible is the single most helpful resource that we could have taken to these pastors.”

Africa for Jesus

88One-hundred and six students and staff from the Back to the Bible Training College received a new ESV Study Bible. Here is a brief video highlighting the vision of Back to the Bible and showing footage from the Training College. The Back to the Bible Training College equips pastors to bring the gospel to Africa. They describe their vision simply as “Africa for Jesus.” At present, their students are from 14 different countries across the continent; their goal is to train pastors from all 52.

Preaching the Gospel in the Philippines

The Philippines, like most countries right now, is experiencing a financial crisis. “Yet, by God’s grace, the church is thriving and many people are turning to God. Problems do make people think about God,” Pastor Ronald Failano reported. In fact, in August the church had a retreat in Zambales. Seven-hundred and fifty young people attended—-many of which put their faith in Christ and were baptized.

91Failano extended his appreciation for the ESV Study Bible as he prepared for the church’s new series on the book of Romans. “At the moment, I am reading Romans and preparing for my message on Sunday. It’s a very useful tool in that it contains so much information, maps, and background that I need. It’s like having everything I need in one study Bible.”

Join us in lifting up these leaders and the resources that have been entrusted to us—”Pray for me as I prepare and study God’s Word, that I may be faithful in preaching God’s Word,” asked Failano, “may the Lord continue to use Crossway in spreading God’s Word and making it understandable. May the Lord find us faithful as we do his will of sharing the gospel with others.”

The Trackback Contest Continues! We will be giving away a new ESV Study Bible every day through Wednesday 11/11/09. Here’s a reminder on how the contest works. As folks continue commenting into next week, we would like to see facebook, twitter, and the blog turn into a place to worship and thank God together. We encourage commenters to share how God has been faithful, good, loving, worthy of praise, gracious, just…(or share verses about his attributes).

Behind the ESV and the ESV Study Bible

THE ESV TRANSLATION: MAINTAINING ACCURACY AND BEAUTY OF LANGUAGE

Among the many different English translations available, the ESV is unique in a number of ways. As an “essentially literal” Bible translation, the ESV seeks to maintain word-for-word accuracy in translating the original Greek and Hebrew, while also retaining beauty, cadence, and readability in English.

To learn more about essentially literal translation and how it differs from other translation philosophies, we would encourage you to see Dr. Leland Ryken’s book Understanding English Bible Translation or you can preview this work through Dr. Ryken’s two part Q&A. Part 1. Part 2.

ESV STUDY BIBLE: GROWING IN GRACE AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST

Crossway brought together an outstanding team of 95 experts and communicators from around the world, from more than 20 different denominations.  The ESV Study Bible provides comprehensive resources equivalent to a 20-volume reference library. In addition to more than 20,000 notes, the ESV Study Bible includes over 50 articles on doctrine, apologetics, and ethics—covering topics such as the Trinity, the reliability of Scripture, how the cannon was put together, and how the Bible was translated.

“We want to see God’s people grow in grace and in their knowledge of Jesus Christ. Our goal with the ESV Study Bible is to encourage people in their faith and to equip them to understand God’s Word so that they can live lives fully pleasing to him,” explains Justin Taylor, Study Bible Project Director and VP of Editorial.

ON THE WEB AND INTO THE FUTURE
It has also been a privilege to publish God’s Word (along with all of the study notes, maps, and articles) on the web, mobile devices, and Amazon’s Kindle—allowing readers to conveniently access the Study Bible wherever they are. Watch for our soon-to-be released application for the iPhone, and a completely updated ESV Online Web site, which will be available later this year.

“It is a tremendous joy and privilege to participate in the ministry of God’s holy Word,” said Geoff Dennis, VP of Sales, Marketing, and Media. “May God bring a renewed love for his Word, an ever-growing desire for sanctified living, and a greater commitment to the gospel—all for the glory of Christ!”
