Called To Care For Orphans

In Adopted for Life, author Russell Moore did more than just communicate information about adoption. His book is a commission to churches and believers to be more than spectators. It’s a call to God’s people to get involved in this Great Commission issue.

Stick with us on the Crossway blog this week to hear some of the stories of those who are stepping up to the front lines of adoption.

Desiring God Live Broadcast with Dave Harvey

2535_harvey

Mark your calendars for this Wednesday, July 28th from 7-9pm CT to join Dave Harvey on desiringGod.org/live. (It’ll be similar to the Ask Paul Tripp event two months ago). As always, we encourage you to send your questions and feedback via Twitter, using the hashtag #dglive.

Who is Dave Harvey?

He recently released his new Crossway book Rescuing Ambition. But there’s more to this man than that. Here’s a helpful bio from the Sovereign Grace Ministries website.

Dave Harvey is responsible for church care, church planting, and international expansion for Sovereign Grace Ministries. He has served as a member of the Sovereign Grace Ministries leadership team since 1995.

Dave has been in pastoral ministry at Covenant Fellowship Church (Glen Mills, PA) since 1986, was ordained in 1988, and served as senior pastor from 1990 to 2008. He has served on the board of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation since 2006. Dave received a Master of Arts in Missiology from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1989, worked toward a Master of Divinity from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1993 to 1995, and in 2001 became a graduate in Westminster’s D.Min. program. The subject of his doctoral thesis was the identification and equipping of church planters.

Dave contributed a chapter to Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World (Crossway, 2008) and is the author of When Sinners Say “I Do”: Discovering the Power of the Gospel for Marriage (Shepherd, 2007). Dave also wrote a chapter for Why Small Groups?, a book from Sovereign Grace’s Pursuit of Godliness series. He continues to work on other writing projects.

Dave lives in West Chester, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Kimm. They have four children and, despite his many protests, one stray cat.

Desiring God Live will be hosting more live broadcasts in the months to come. August 25 we’ve scheduled Tullian Tchividjian to be with us. So stay tuned!

Raising Children in a Post-Christian, Anti-Family Society

web_cover_imageMore teens are turning away from the faith than ever before.  Some estimate over 80% of Christian teens walk away from Christianity by the end of their freshman year of college. Something must be done.

In Family Driven Faith, Voddie Baucham shows readers that God has not left us alone in raising godly children in a post-Christian, anti-family society. Based on God’s command to Moses in Deuteronomy 6 to teach the Word diligently to the children of Israel, Baucham provides principles for multi-generational faithfulness.

Hear what parents are saying about Family Driven Faith from around the blogosphere:

1. A Life Better Than I Deserve: “Expect to be challenged to consider such ideas as homeschooling your children, joining a family-integrated church, catechizing your children, sacrificing sports goals for your children in favor of both corporate and family worship, understanding and practicing a biblical view of love and more.”

2. Embracing Destiny: “With refreshing honesty and eye-opening facts and figures, Baucham calls Christian parents to step up to the God-given responsibility and privilege of worshiping as a family and instilling Biblical truth and values in our children.”

3. Think Outside the Box: “While this book is written for all Christian parents, there is one important thing that stood out for us because it’s personal to us. Being an African American (AA) Christian who thinks outside the box has come with many challenges. Having another black man talk about the things Voddie shares is so encouraging to other black men like my husband.”

4. Canadian Ladybug Reviews: “Family Driven Faith is a must have for any family – especially those who are wondering how to bring back their kids on the right path. It is never too late. You can do something about it.”

5. Happy Little Homemaker: “There was very little I disagreed with in this book. In fact, I agreed so much that it took forever to read this book because I kept getting distracted by having to remedy certain things. Especially in the section where he discussed training your children in character and about God; I jumped right up and began buying the homeschool books I’d been wanting for my preschool daughter because I knew I didn’t have many books like that for her age. I spent the whole book doing things like that.”

6. Home . . . with Purpose: “To sum it up, I think Family Driven Faith should be required reading for every Christian parent! It’s nothing short of a clearly organized manual to equip parents with the tools needed to raise our children biblically. What a treasure!”

7. Pam’s Private Reflections: “I liked Mr. Baucham’s frank convictions and his ability to stand up for what he believes. While I respectfully disagree with some of his advice, it is thought provoking and worth reading.”

8. Eskypades: “Overall, there are many things in the book that need to be said and said repeatedly and loudly. Unless we as Christians in general wake up to the reality that our children are not learning of God through either our direct teaching nor by indirect example through our lives, what hope do we have of their continuing in the Christian faith? I would recommend this book (with some reservation) since there are several things that can be learned from the book, especially in the area of family worship, which I thought was the best chapter in the book.”

9. Hearthside Homeschool Reviews . . . and More: “While I agree with Voddie Bauchman Jr’s quote, taken from the book jacket for his book, Family Driven Faith, I find that I do not agree with his conclusions.”

10. Debbie’s Homeschool Corner: “I have read a lot of Christian parenting books and am very impressed with this one. It is full of practical information and ideas for teaching children a Christian worldview and implementing a family worship time.”

11. Dark Glass Ponderings: “In short, I LOVED this book!  I think it has so much to offer any family who desires to disciple their children, but may lack the know-how.”

12. Growing for Christ: “Don’t read this book……if you want to be told like it is.  Voddie Baucham, Jr will lay it down and he doesn’t hold back, his teachings are from the Bible and strictly Biblical. There are no water downed, feel good platitudes…”

God is Seeking Worshipers

9781433515040“God is seeking worshipers. He is on the lookout and on the prowl and on the pursuit for people who worship him. He is not indifferent to whether human beings worship him. He is jealous for his infinite worth. And he means for worship to be ascribed to him.” – John Piper

What is the meaning of worship? What does the Bible teach about corporate worship? John Piper’s newest  twelve session DVD/Study series asserts that if God is inestimably glorious and infinitely happy, our worship will have both gravity and gladness.

A Heart & Passion for the Glory of God

97815813497881What do Charles C. Ryrie (a leading theologian of dispensationalism), Hans Urs von Balthasar (a Roman Catholic Priest), and John Piper (a reformed pastor) all have in common? Their heart and passion for the glory of God.

In The Glory of God, from the Theology in Community series, Stephen J. Nichols brings the works of these three men together as he talks about the glory of God present and past. He collects them not to compare or settle an argument, but to lift the eyes of the reader upwards to the glory of the God that captured the hearts of all three men.

Nichols writes:

“Balthasar offers a significant way of reading the Bible by seeing the Bible as first and foremost the revelation of the glory of God. I would argue that Balthasar reads the Bible this way because he was so steeped in the church fathers. In them he found the same insistence as that of his own work, namely, the insistence on the centrality of the glory of God.” (p. 34)

“Piper finds in “Edwards’s relentless God-centeredness” a great deal of both correction and hope for the misguided church of today, overly influenced by pragmatic concerns and numerical measures of success. Edwards’s God-centered vision serves as a necessary corrective to an overly human-centered vision.” (p. 36)

“Ryrie reminds theologians of the necessity of grounding their work in Scripture. Ryrie presents the biblical teaching on the glory of God in all of its complexity. He notes that God is glorified both in judging and in blessing, something that is difficult at times to admit.” (p. 42)

The Glory of God continues with contributions from Andreas J. Kostenberger, Christopher W. Morgan, and others on ‘The Glory of God in the old Testament’ (chapter 2) , ‘The Glory of God in John’s Gospel and Revelation’ (chapter 4), and ‘A Pastoral Theology of the Glory of God’ (chapter 7). Though the topics and contributors are diverse, this maintains its powerful and compelling theme from the first essay by Nichols and never lets up until the last page.
