A Passion for Evangelism

Ajith Fernando addresses three challenges to evangelism that people face worldwide and how we can maintain a passion for evangelism. Here’s a brief preview, but be sure to check out the video for the full context:

  1. There is great opposition to the Christian belief in absolute truth. As a result we are often pinned as arrogant. The best way to combat this is by being a servant in the community.
  2. There is a much wider mission of the church—including relief, development, and justice. Human need issues and temporary needs often pull easier at heart strings than the eternal need of people. As a result, it’s more esteemed by society at large and there are more funds allocated to it. Because these needs never cease, it’s easy to neglect evangelism.
  3. There are ever-present government regulations.

A Challenge to Share the Gospel in 2011

For I am not ashamed of the gospel,
for it is the power of God
for salvation to everyone who believes,
to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)

If you’re reading this post, chances are you’ve been transformed by the gospel, love the gospel, and recognize that even you need to hear the gospel on a regular basis. You see the importance of gospel-clarity in preaching and desire to live a gospel-centered life.

It’s when it comes to actually sharing the gospel that many of us waver. Whether it’s with a family member, friend, acquaintance, or even complete stranger—there are strong forces working against us. Busyness, fear of awkwardness, feelings of inadequacy, and so on.

This week on the Crossway blog, we want to share encouraging excerpts and resources as we consider together what it looks like to share the gospel in 2011.

Piper on the Precious Value of God’s Word

Many of you have come up with plans to get into God’s Word in 2011. Here’s further encouragement for you from John Piper in an address he gave at the GELF Breakfast at Lausanne 2010. It’s well worth the 20 minutes (even if you check it out in 10 minute segments).

“This book is very precious. We love people, we love him, because we think with the illumination of the Holy Spirit about this book. And I hope you love it. I’m sure you do. So I hope that you love it more.”—John Piper
