Video: The Church Planter & Their Identity in Christ

At 2011 Gospel Coalition National Conference, Tullian Tchividjian, Dave Harvey, and Mike McKinley talked about the church planter and the need for his identity to be in Christ. Here are some highlights:

  • 0:50—Plant your church or build your church with you replacement in view because we’re all being replaced.
  • 2:00—The gospel alone can make you rejoice and revel in your expendability. The temptation for church planters is to locate all your meaning, security, significance, purpose, value, worth , and identity in the success of your church.
  • 3:06—Only the gospel frees you from the pressure to perform.
  • 4:40—This isn’t all about you.
  • 5:27—All of the approval you long for you already have in Christ.

Watch part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, and part 5.

“What is the Gospel?” Outreach Event

Guest post by Dan Taylor (Chairman of Missions Committee at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Sandy Springs, GA)

You’ve been having lunch with your friend for months. Or, you’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to talk with your relative about God. They finally ask you, “What is the gospel anyway”? What would you tell them?  Where would you start in sharing the gospel? Is it just about Jesus and what he did on the Cross? Does the statement “Jesus is Lord” cover it?

Greg Gilbert’s What is the Gospel? is a concise and easy to read book that explains this question, plainly and simply. It is a must have for your collection of theological books. Better yet, it is a must have to give out to your friends, family, acquaintances or strangers. It not only describes what the gospel is; but gives a depth of understanding for each of the 4 great pillars of the gospel.

At a recent art festival in our city, our church set up a booth with a banner over the top, asking the question, “What is the gospel?” We gave the book out for free to anyone that was interested. It was great for conversations starters! We had one or two dissenters, but mostly we had good conversations with atheists, Muslims, and your average “good person.” If you’re looking for a way to reach out to your community, consider using the book What is the Gospel? as a giveaway in your approach. After all, there is a free gift from God, eternal life in Jesus Christ, to those who repent and believe.

Video: King Solomon and the Temptations of Money, Sex, and Power

Justin Taylor and Dr. Philip Graham Ryken (President of Wheaton College) discuss Ryken’s newest book, King Solomon: The Temptations of Money, Sex, and Power. Here are a few highlights:

  • How could Solomon be such a wise man and make so many foolish mistakes? (1:40)
  • How are the lessons you learn from Solomon coming into play in both your role as a pastor and now as a college president? How are those roles different? (3:18)
  • How do you make the connection between the historical person of Solomon and the life of Jesus Christ? (5:06)
  • Talk about the phrase “The king is dead, long live the king.” That was an especially poignant moment in the book. (8:05)
  • Do you believe that Solomon ended up in heaven or hell? This is a guy obviously blessed, obviously anointed, obviously had a relationship with God, but it ended very, very poorly. (11:17)

Crossway Site Launches Google +1 Support

At Crossway, we’ve been enjoying the dawn of a new social network the past couple of weeks: Google+. We’ll set up a business page for you to follow us as soon as it’s available, but in the meanwhile you may have noticed a new icon underneath each blog post that allows you to recommend our post to your friends. If you’re logged into your Google account, your +1 will show your support in a similar way to the “Like button” on Facebook or the “RT” (Retweet) on Twitter.

We’ve also rolled this out on all product pages for our books and Bibles (for example). Think of it like this, if you have a Google+ account and something that we publish benefited or intrigues you, clicking the +1 is a new and easy way for you to share your appreciation with the world. If this sounds a bit confusing, just know that we’re thrilled to be able to launch a new way to share the valuable message of Christ in each of the social networks that our customers love.
