Gospel Application Bible – September

The apostle Paul summed up his whole ministry as existing “to testify to the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24). That single-minded goal is the heartbeat of the Gospel Application Bible. Produced out of the conviction that the Bible is a unified message of God’s grace culminating in Jesus, it is a significant new tool to help readers see Christ in all the Bible, and the gospel in all of life.

The Gospel Application Bible features all-new book introductions and gospel application notes written by a team of over 50 outstanding pastors and scholars. This specially prepared material outlines passage-by-passage God’s redemptive purposes of grace that echo all through Scripture and culminate in Christ. And focusing on heart transformation rather than mere behavior modification, its points of application emphasize the Hows and Whys of practical application to daily living.

  1. Are there any plans to have a single column ESV with red letter text?

    Comment by Joe — February 10, 2013 @ 6:49 pm

  2. Joe, I’m afraid we don’t have any planned right now, but that could be something we consider in the future. Sorry to disappoint!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 11, 2013 @ 11:51 am

  3. The Omega Thinline Reference sounds like a deluxe edition of the Large Print Thinline Reference. Is that about right? Also, in addition to the upgrade cover and art gilt edges will the Omega have nicer paper for a thin line edition?

    Comment by Steve Robenalt — February 11, 2013 @ 1:56 pm

  4. Steve, great questions. The Omega Thinline Reference Bible is basically the same as the Large Print Thinline Reference, although the text size is slightly smaller, and the margins are narrower (we were trying to create a Bible with less bulk). The Omega Bible will feature high quality European Bible paper, an top-of-the-line upgrade from the paper in many of our Bibles. Hope that helps!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 11, 2013 @ 3:49 pm

  5. Thanks Andrew. So does that mean the page size will be slightly smaller than the Large Print Thinline with reduced text size and margins? Or will it just have increase white space between lines, etc?

The paper sounds nice and should look good with the line matching then.

    Comment by Steve Robenalt — February 11, 2013 @ 3:55 pm

  6. Steve, reading back over my initial response I realize I wasn’t giving you accurate information. Both the Omega and the Large Print Thinline will have the same trim size: 6.125″ x 9.125″. The Omega will feature slightly smaller text (10-point), and will therefore have LARGER margins than the Large Print Thinline. Not dramatically so, but larger nonetheless. The page layout should be identical. I hope that helps, and once again I apologize for my first response.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 11, 2013 @ 4:13 pm

  7. Thanks Andrew. That sounds even better. Can’t wait to see it!

    Comment by Steve Robenalt — February 11, 2013 @ 4:17 pm

  8. Any plans to publish a TaNaK ordering of the ESV anytime in the near future?

    Comment by Chris — February 12, 2013 @ 10:13 am

  9. Chris, I know the idea has been floated in the past. We don’t have any plans of publishing such an edition, but I’ll bring it up again.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 12, 2013 @ 10:45 am

  10. Thanks Andrew! Would love to see a more canonically-sensitive ordering of the OT, though I realize it could take some years of teaching before the demand is there for it.

    Comment by Chris — February 12, 2013 @ 10:51 am

  11. Andrew – any idea of when the Omega will be up on Crossway’s site, hopefully with a pdf sample page? Would love to see that.

    Comment by Steve Robenalt — February 12, 2013 @ 11:05 am

  12. Steve, I’ll look into why the Omega Bible isn’t up on our website yet, but in the mean time here’s a pdf sample of the interior: http://static.crossway.org/excerpt/bibles/omega-thinline-reference-bible/omegathinlineref%282%29.pdf

    Hope that helps!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 12, 2013 @ 1:45 pm

  13. Looks like there’s something wrong with link.

    Comment by Steve Robenalt — February 12, 2013 @ 3:19 pm

  14. Steve, my apologies. Try this one: http://static.crossway.org/excerpt/bibles/omega-thinline-reference-bible/omegathinlineref.pdf

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 12, 2013 @ 3:40 pm

  15. How does the forthcoming Single Column Heritage compare with the Single Column Legacy (which is one of the best Bibles I’ve ever seen, in my opinion)?

    Comment by z — February 12, 2013 @ 7:55 pm

  16. Z, great question. The Single Column Heritage Bible is similar to the Single Column Legacy Bible in many respects: the Bible text is single column, and there are no cross-references. The text is laid out in a reader-friendly format, and the Bible features line-matching. The section headings are in line with the text, however, and the margins are considerably smaller. The trim size of the Single Column Heritage Bible is smaller, quite close to a book in size and bulk. It was created as a similar concept to the Single Column Legacy Bible, but as a more portable alternative. You can download a PDF of the interior here: http://static.crossway.org/excerpt/bibles/single-column-heritage/single.column.heritage.interior.pdf Hope that helps!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 12, 2013 @ 10:29 pm

  17. Thanks for the quick response Andrew!

An unrelated design question: a lot of these Bibles have a very elegant look, but the business of the spine detracts (at least for me) from the overall attractiveness of them. ESV or English Standard Version is stamped three different times right next to each other. Wouldn’t just one be sufficient? Of course, you can’t please everyone, especially on the internet!

    Comment by z — February 13, 2013 @ 8:32 am

  18. Z, thanks for your comments. I’m not sure what the precedent is for stamping on spines, but we’ll take your comments under consideration.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 13, 2013 @ 8:57 am

  19. Are there any plans for a full pocket bible, OT & NT?

    Comment by John — February 15, 2013 @ 9:18 am

  20. John, thanks for your question. Right now we don’t have any plans for a full pocket Bible, although we do already publish a full Compact Bible, which is quite small.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 15, 2013 @ 3:16 pm

  21. I find pocket Bibles convenient for taking with anywhere without having to keep track of it. Have a few spare minute you weren’t expecting? There it is. I’ve been missing having one in ESV.

    Comment by John — February 15, 2013 @ 5:13 pm

  22. Any plans for an ESV/MSG parallel bible soon???

    Comment by Bear — February 15, 2013 @ 10:55 pm

  23. Bear, thanks for your question. We don’t have any plans for an ESV/MSG parallel Bible. Occasionally third parties license the ESV to produce their own editions, and I know you can see the two texts side-by-side on several places online, including Biblegateway.com. Sorry to disappoint!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 16, 2013 @ 10:38 am

  24. I’m very excited about the ‘Gospel Application Bible’ being released in September. I only wish it could be sooner. Keep up the great work. Be blessed!!!

    Comment by William Cook — February 16, 2013 @ 10:41 am

  25. William, thank you for your kind words and encouragement. We’re excited about the Gospel Application Bible project as well, and are looking forward to releasing more information, including interior samples, as soon as its ready!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 16, 2013 @ 11:03 am

  26. Okay thank you. Im assuming that would be the same for an ESV/NLT parallel as well?

    Comment by Bear — February 16, 2013 @ 11:29 am

  27. Bear, yes, I’m afraid so. The only parallel Bible editions we publish are diglots of the ESV and other languages (Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, German).

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 16, 2013 @ 11:32 am

  28. Okay great thank you so much for your replies! If you can, you should drop a line to update the ESV bible app for the IPhone5. Bless and be blessed!

    Comment by Bear — February 16, 2013 @ 11:40 am

  29. I have noticed that the only thing missing from your Bible selection is a double-column verse by verse setting.

Are their any plans to release that type of setting… I am a pastor, so the verse setting helps with keeping track of the verse.

It would also be helpful if it had a larger font for us preacher types. I know that you guys have already released the verse by verse single column Bible to replace the now Out Of Print Single Column Reference. I wish the new edition had the same larger font of the edition it replaced.

    thanks,
    Be Encouraged:-)

    Comment by Rev. Isaac C. Johnson — February 16, 2013 @ 11:50 am

  30. Bear, yes, updates to our iOS apps for the iPhone 5 are a common request. Our digital team is working on it, and we hope to have something ready soon.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 16, 2013 @ 11:54 am

  31. Rev. Johnson, thank you for the suggestion! I’ve heard something similar suggested before. We’re always open to new ideas, particularly to ideas for new text settings, although at times we can’t deliver on them (the fabled Giant Print UltraThin Wide Margin Compact Reference Bible). I will pass on your idea to our Bible production department, and hopefully it’s something we can consider in the future!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 16, 2013 @ 11:59 am

  32. I just clicked on an ad that popped up on a newspaper website for a “Single Column Reference Bible-ESV” which took me to lifeway.com. The page was for a Single Column Reference Bible-ESV selling for $195.00 and then had “not yet published” and a button to “Pre-Buy.” Is Crossway planning a comeback for this particular Bible? I have read many good reviews of it, and it has always sounded to me like a format, font, and everything I was interested in.

    Comment by Luanne — February 18, 2013 @ 11:52 am

  33. Is the ESV Single Column Heritage like the Cambridge Clarion but cheaper? How does the thickness compare?

    Comment by Adam — February 18, 2013 @ 1:39 pm

  34. Luanne, thanks for your question. To my knowledge we are not planning a comeback for the Single Column Reference Bible, and I’m guessing this is an outdated ad with an old link. We are relaunching our Personal Reference Bible (single column format, references) in the coming months, although I realize it’s a smaller format. I’ll pass on the idea of a larger-format single column reference edition to our Bible production manager. Thanks!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 23, 2013 @ 10:36 am

  35. Adam, great question. The main difference between the Heritage Bible and the Clarion is the Clarion features cross-references while the Heritage Bible will not. The Clarion has 2080 pages while the Heritage Bible will have 1824 pages, so the Heritage will be a slimmer edition. The trim size for both will be comparable. Hope that helps!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 23, 2013 @ 10:55 am

  36. Andrew, the Heritage Bible should be nice and I’m looking forward to it. Do you know if they paper will be the same as used with the Legacy?

    Comment by Steve — February 23, 2013 @ 11:11 am

  37. I love the ESV translation. I just wished the Large Print came with red letter. Are there any plans for this in the future? Also with indexes.

    Comment by Sheila — February 23, 2013 @ 6:19 pm

  38. Steve, the paper will not be the same used with the Legacy, but will come from the same European mill. Should be high quality.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 26, 2013 @ 11:57 am

  39. Sheila, we don’t have plans for an indexed Large Print edition. We do offer a Large Print Thinline Reference Bible that features Words of Christ in red. Perhaps that might serve your needs?

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 26, 2013 @ 12:17 pm

  40. Andrew, I see the Heritage specifically says line matching, but the Omega does not. Will the Omega also have line matching?

    Comment by cydoiron — February 27, 2013 @ 3:36 am

  41. Cydoiron, the Omega will also have line matching. It’s adapted from the setting of the Large Print Thinline Reference Bible, which features line matching. Hope that helps!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — February 27, 2013 @ 1:38 pm

  42. Thanks, Andrew. That’s what I was hoping for.

    Comment by cydoiron — February 27, 2013 @ 7:33 pm

  43. Hi,
I’m wondering if there is any information available about an issue I am having with the Classic ESV Reference Bible I am using on my iPad. Unlike any of the regular books I have in my Library downloaded from the Apple iBooks store, my Esv has gotten sort of slower and slower. I like to highlight phrases and verses. Other downloads are remaining fast and responsive, but my ESV takes ten seconds or more just to turn the page nowadays.
    Any suggestions?
    Scott

    Comment by Scott — March 2, 2013 @ 9:37 am

  44. Hi, is there any chance of an ESV version of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL)? I know the catholic three year lectionary for England, Ireland and Australia will feature an adapted ESV but there are plenty of other denominations who follow the RCL and would appreciate an ESV edition.

    Comment by Fr Edward — March 3, 2013 @ 4:54 pm

  45. Can we get a preview of the scholars and pastors that worked on the commentary for the Gospel App bible? Thanks!

    Comment by Jarrod Connolly — March 4, 2013 @ 10:30 am

  46. Yes, please update the app for the iPhone 5! I love the app, but want to see it updated.

    Comment by Matt — March 4, 2013 @ 10:17 pm

  47. Scott, our digital licensing manager suggests you try downloading the latest version of the file. We’ve made improvements over time, and the new file should have better performance. Hope that helps!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — March 5, 2013 @ 9:33 am

  48. Jarrod, great request! You can download a list of the Gospel Application Bible contributors here: http://static.crossway.org/excerpt/bibles/gospel-application-bible/gab.contributors.list.pdf

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — March 5, 2013 @ 11:19 am

  49. Andrew, The Omega thinline is advertised as limited edition. Has Crossway determined what that quantity will be? Also, have you set a list price yet?

    Comment by Cd — March 6, 2013 @ 7:13 pm

  50. Also, where will the prining on the Omega be done? Italy, like the Legacy?

    Comment by Cd — March 6, 2013 @ 7:39 pm

  51. Cd, I can’t comment on the quantity, but the retail price will be $249.99. It will be printed in Italy at the same printer as the Legacy.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — March 7, 2013 @ 8:20 am

  52. Is the Heritage still on schedule for an April 30th release? Also, do you know what the thickness of this Bible will be? Trim size says 5″ x 7-3/8″, but there is no thicknss listed.
    Thanks, cd

    Comment by cd — March 9, 2013 @ 7:51 am

  53. Will the paper in the new personal size reference bibles be similar to the current?

    Comment by Julie — March 9, 2013 @ 10:36 pm

  54. Julie, the paper for the Personal Reference Bible (updated design) should be the same as what we’ve used in the past for our Personal Size Reference Bible.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — March 11, 2013 @ 8:51 am

  55. Cd, the Heritage Bible is still on schedule for an April 30th release, although the calfskin edition will be delayed by a few weeks. The thickness with the cover will be about 1.5 inches, the page block measuring 1.25 inches thick.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — March 11, 2013 @ 12:52 pm

  56. Hi Andrew, I was wondering if you guys were going to make the large print thinline refrence bible (red letter)* in a brown or darker brown.? Instead of just black and charcoal. I love the large print refrence thinline but am holding off to buy one until I find out if you guys are releasing a brown.(red letter) thanks for your response :)

    Comment by Daniel Daffron — March 11, 2013 @ 7:01 pm

  57. Hi Andrew, I was wondering if you guys were going to make the large print thinline refrence bible (red letter)* in a brown or darker brown.? Instead of just black and charcoal. Comment by Daniel Daffron — March 11, 2013 @ 7:14 pm

  58. I saw today that the Single Column Heritage Bible (and many other forthcoming bibles) has been pushed back to May 31, 2013, when it was originally scheduled for April 30, 2013. Why? That is really disappointing. I was really looking forward to the Heritage Bible. Not to mention, most college and seminary graduations happen before May 31st. I (and I’m sure many other people) am planning on buying one of these new Bibles as a gift for a graduating student. But now I (and others) can’t. We will have to buy an alternative gift. You are missing out on a huge opportunity. I know you might have some good reasons—production, marketing, etc. But PLEASE RECONSIDER. Please release the Heritage Bible (and other new bibles) on April 30th.

    Comment by Calvin Gau — April 6, 2013 @ 11:05 pm

  59. I love the ESV and recently purchased the study bible. However, there is something that has always perplexed me. That is, shouldn’t a “study” Bible have self-pronouncing text? After all, shouldn’t learning how to pronounce all those biblical names be a logical part of “studying” the Bible? It’s been my experience that even seasoned Bible scholars will mess up a lot of the pronunciations without it. Indeed, it is sad that we have to purchase a separate volume for this.

    Comment by Michael — April 9, 2013 @ 7:17 pm

  60. Michael, thanks for your comments. That’s an interesting idea I’ll need to think a bit about.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — April 9, 2013 @ 11:59 pm

  61. What is the thickness of the Personal Reference bible? Will this be offered in calfskin? Thanks!!

    Comment by Manny — April 12, 2013 @ 10:47 am

  62. Calvin, this edition saw some unforeseen production challenges and, as you’ve noted, will be delayed a couple weeks. We do the best we can but can’t always control all the factors that go into the very complicated printing process. Very sorry this has thrown a wrench in your plans!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — April 15, 2013 @ 10:18 am

  63. Manny, we don’t have mocked up copies of the Personal Reference Bible yet bt it will be close to our old Personal Size Reference Bible, around 1500 pages (roughly 1.5 inches thick). We will not initially launch the line with a calfskin edition, but that is possibly something we would consider in the future.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — April 15, 2013 @ 9:34 pm

  64. Is it just me or are the red letters of Christ not as bright as other bibles? Why is that?

    Comment by Tim — April 23, 2013 @ 1:49 pm

  65. Tim, our Bible production team makes decisions about inks that work well with our particular paper suppliers, and that will be optimally readable in our larger-format red letter editions.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — April 23, 2013 @ 1:56 pm

  66. I’ve been looking everywhere and can’t find any info regarding the thickness of the upcoming Omega thinline reference. Can anyone tell me? Thanks!

    Comment by Bryan — April 24, 2013 @ 8:08 pm

  67. Bryan – I think I saw somewhere that it would be similar to the Large Print Thinline which is about an inch or just under.

    Comment by Steve Robenalt — April 24, 2013 @ 9:22 pm

  68. Bryan, Steve is right. It features the Large Print Thinline Reference page block, which is right around 1 inch thick.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — April 24, 2013 @ 9:35 pm

  69. When is the single column heritage calfskin bible due to come out? Unless I am just confused, Amazon reports the end of April while the Crossway website reports the end of May? Can someone add some light to this? Thanks!

    Comment by Matthew — April 27, 2013 @ 12:04 am

  70. Matthew, the Single Column Heritage Bible was originally scheduled to be published in April. Due to production delays, however, it’s now scheduled for May. That change apparently was not updated on Amazon. Sorry to disappoint!

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — April 29, 2013 @ 8:11 am

  71. I am looking forward to the launch of the new Personal Reference ESV. Will it have Bible maps, sadly lacking in the original Personal Size Reference ESV? Thank you.

    Comment by David Dewey (UK) — May 1, 2013 @ 8:51 am

  72. David, unfortunately the upcoming Personal Reference Bible will not feature maps.

    Comment by Andrew Tebbe — May 1, 2013 @ 1:27 pm

  73. Thanks Andrew… still on track for a late June release date?

    Comment by Bryan Bailey — May 4, 2013 @ 8:52 pm

  74. Bryan, yes, it is to my knowledge!

  75. When will the ESV Keyword come out? Will it be full of maps/charts. Concordance in the back or bottom of the page? Lots of notes?

  76. The ESV,is my regular Bible, especially for study and sermon preparation. The cross-references are excellent, but the built-in concordance is not so great. At most there are 14,000 entries, and far fewer in the compact and personal editions. My NIV has 35,000 entries and my old RSV about 22,000. I notice the Kindle ESV has a far more substantial concordance. Are we likely to see any ESVs with a better concordance? Around 25,000 to 30,000 careful chosen entries would be a good balance.

  77. Scott, I’m not sure what Bible you’re referring to…. We don’t have an ESV Keyword Bible in the pipeline. Can you tell me more about where you’re seeing such an edition?

  78. Several people have asked about the production delays with our Single Column Heritage Bible. I’ve just learned there was a production problem with the Bibles and we’re being forced to reprint them. This is an unusual situation, but unfortunately these things happen from time to time in the printing industry. We’re expecting our calfskin editions in-house in June. Our new projected publication date for the three other editions will not be until August. If anyone has questions, please let me know.

  81. Andrew,

Is the Omega Bible leather lined? Thanks!

  83. Andrew,

Thanks! My question is regarding the inner lining. Some of your nicer Bibles have a leather lining (calfskin ESV Study Bible) while some have a paper lining (Top Grain Leather Legacy). Do you know if the Omega will have a leather inner lining on the goat and calfskin editions? Thanks for such a quick response by the way!

  84. Chris, I’m sorry I initially misunderstood. The lining will be natural leather.
