I am writing, first, in grateful appreciation for your support of Crossway. As a not-for-profit ministry, the Crossway passion is to provide the Bible and gospel-centered literature as widely as possible, on a global basis. So I am deeply grateful to you for your help in doing this.

Secondly, I am writing because we have a significant opportunity and a corresponding need. We have been offered a matching grant in the amount of $270,000, if we are able to raise an additional $270,000 to match the grant.

The purpose of the grant is to help provide the Bible and Bible learning resources free to 1 million people globally—free via the Internet, and free globally, anywhere and everywhere, on every major tablet and smart phone device—particularly to people in great need in China, India, and Africa.

The need is urgent: First, because the all-or-nothing goal needs to be reached by May 31, 2012—but more importantly because of the massive need worldwide for the Bible, and for essential tools to teach and understand the Bible.

The good news is that, as of this date, we have already received commitments for $37,498—though this means that we still need to raise $232,502.

I would be deeply grateful if the Lord might lead you to help reach the goal before the deadline of May 31, 2012.

With my great appreciation for your support, and for your help now with the matching grant, to provide the Bible and Bible learning resources to 1 million people.

Grateful for your partnership in the gospel,

Lane T. Dennis, Ph.D.

You can give now or view the progress toward our goal.

We have lot of exciting Bible editions in store for the ESV in 2012. We’ve listed below five of the new editions, each available for order from Crossway.org or your favorite retailer by the end of the listed month (the Large Print Compact is already available). We have even more in store for 2012, so keep an eye out in the coming months.

April

Large Print Compact Bible – The goal for the Large Print Compact Bible was to combine the convenience of a smaller trim size with the readability that comes with larger type. It features line-matching, a production process that aligns ink on both sides of a page, minimizing show-through. We’ve released it in four TruTone editions, but have plans for more cover options. You can download a pdf excerpt of the interior and compare it to the interior of the original Compact Bible. Below are some comparison photos between the two (Large Print Compact on the left):

May

Vintage Thinline Bible – This is a premium Bible at an affordable price. It features an interior identical to that of the original Thinline Bible, and will come in four calfskin covers available for $99 each. Each cover is crafted by hand, but comes from three pieces of leather instead of one. This makes for a high quality cover with lower production costs. The four covers are pictured below:

June

Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible – The ESV Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible features the Bible text in a single-column format. Displaying each verse on its own line, the Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible was especially designed for preaching, teaching, and in-depth Bible study. We’ve had a lot of requests from pastors for a Bible like this, and hope it’s a helpful edition for everyone who studies and teaches God’s Word! It will be initially released in three covers. Download a pdf excerpt of the interior.

July

Large Print Thinline Reference Bible – This Bible combines the Thinline features with cross-references and a larger type size. The cross-references are located in the bottom corner of each page to help keep the bulk down. Even though the type size is very readable, the Large Print Thinline Reference Bible is still close to one inch thin. This is another edition that will feature line-matching. It will be initially published with four cover options, including a top grain leather edition. Download a pdf excerpt of the interior and compare it to the interior of the original Thinline Bible. Below are photos comparing the two (Large Print Thinline Reference on the left). (Please note the Large Print Thinline Reference Bible below is a pre-production mockup. It’s pictured here for dimension comparisons only.)

August

Single Column Journaling Bible– Building off the popularity of the original Journaling Bible, we’re releasing a single-column version. Like the original, it will feature two-inch lined margins, but each line of Bible text now has its own line for writing sermon notes, prayers, or other observations you might have. It will be initially published in three cover options. Compare the interior of the Single Column Journaling Bible with that of the original. Below are photos comparing the two (Single Column Journaling Bible on the left). (Please note the Single Column Journaling Bible below is a pre-production mockup. It’s pictured here for dimension comparisons only.)

The ESV Study Bible, Personal Size paperback edition is now available on Crossway.org for $29.99 ($22.50 for Impact members), as well as Amazon, WTS Books, CBD, and others. This edition contains all the content of the original ESV Study Bible, with the exception of some of the articles going online to save space. And while it’s a paperback, it still has a sewn binding, which means the pages won’t fall out after extended use.

We think this will be a useful format in general, but especially for the following:

1. The Student – If you’re taking a course on the Bible, this could be a great companion resource. The book introductions and study notes are helpful for quickly getting the gist of a Bible book or passage. Some professors are even starting to assign the ESV Study Bible as a required text for their classes, and those students can save some money with the paperback edition.

2. The Traveler – Have you ever tried to take your Bible somewhere and opened up your bag only to discover your Bible’s pages smashed, or the cover bent at an awkward angle? Sometimes it’s nice to have a Bible dedicated for “wear and tear.” This is an inexpensive but resource-packed edition for anyone wanting to travel with a study Bible.

3. The Church Leader – An ESV Study Bible with a lower price makes it easier to buy Study Bibles in bulk. Pastors and church leaders can consider giving paperback ESV Study Bibles to new Christians, small groups, or those involved in discipleship programs. This is an affordable training resource that can help churches equip their congregation for spiritual growth.

Bible Design Blog recently posted an interview with Crossway’s Bible production department on the Single Column Legacy Bible. This is an informative post for those interested in how the Single Column Legacy Bible was produced. Here’s an excerpt:

Q. What is the story behind the Single Column Legacy ESV? How did the idea originate?

The original project was conceived under the working title of “Reader’s Thinline Bible.” The goal was to create a single-column, text-only, reader’s edition that focused on an inviting readable page and beautiful design.

Our Bible typesetter relied heavily on Canadian typesetter Robert Bringhurst’s The Elements of Typographic Style as he developed the page design. Essentially, we tried to follow the “Renaissance Ideal” or “perfect page” layout. This layout refers to a set of principles called the “canons of page construction” that all focus around a 2:3 ration of page geometry. Jan Tschichold reintroduced this typographic ideal in the twentieth century, calling it a method “upon which it is impossible to improve” and which produces “the perfect book.” We stuck closely to this design philosophy, although we did have to make a few adjustments for the sake of overall page count.

Mark Bertrand runs Bible Design Blog, a site “dedicated to the physical form of the Good Book.” In his blog Bertrand reviews high-end, quality Bible editions and processes and has much to say about how Bible design and production impact a reader’s experience. If in the past you’ve wondered about the differences in Bible materials (i.e. bonded leather versus genuine leather), check out his guide for beginners. If you’re a skeptic of high-end Bibles, his FAQ page will probably address many of your questions and objections.

Some of you have been patiently waiting for an update on the status of the Top Grain Leather edition of the Single Column Legacy Bible. Regrettably, there were some production issues with the Top Grain Leather edition that did not meet our high standards*. Please note these production issues were limited to this edition only – the two TruTone and the black Genuine Leather editions do not have the same defects and are available today.

We’ve evaluated the production flaws with our printer and are having the Top Grain Leather editions reprinted as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, they will not be available for at least three months. Once we have a firm publication date, we will post it on the Top Grain Leather edition’s product page.

This is designed to be one of the finest Bible editions we offer, meant to last a lifetime, and we were simply unwilling to sell an imperfect product. Please accept our apologies for the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause. If you had preordered the Top Grain Leather edition, please contact your e-tailer’s customer service department for information on how best to proceed with your order.

We look forward to offering this premium product in the coming months. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

*The editions featured in reviews and blog posts on sites such as evangelicalbible.com and bibledesignblog.com were part of a very small shipment of advance copies that did not contain the same defects.

We know we’re supposed to read our Bibles. We hold the deep conviction that this is God’s special revelation to us. But let’s be honest, sometimes it’s hard to nail down what reading God’s Word is actually supposed to accomplish.

Fortunately, the Bible isn’t silent on matters of its own effectiveness.

In The Gospel and Scripture: How to Read the Bible, Pastor Mike Bullmore has compiled a “representative sample” of what the Bible, itself, claims to do:

It initiates faith: “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ”
(Rom. 10:17).

It gives new spiritual life: “You have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Pet. 1:23).

It helps us grow spiritually: “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation”
(1 Pet. 2:2).

It sanctifies: “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17).

It searches the heart and convicts: “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb. 4:12).

It liberates: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32).

It refreshes and renews: “Give me life according to your word!” (Ps. 119:25).

It revives and enlightens: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple” (Ps. 19:7; see also Ps. 19:8–11).

A Few Questions:

Has the knowledge of these claims made it down to your heart yet?

If you know these claims to be true, are you truly expecting them from Scripture?

How could this change your approach reading the Bible?

Scripture is useful not by some mystical operation but through the very ordinary means of teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. By these means the Bible shows itself very profitable.” – Mike Bullmore, The Gospel and Scripture: How to Read the Bible

With the start of the new year many of you have some strategy for reading the Bible, whether through an established reading plan or on your own. We’ve compiled a list of 7 Crossway and ESV resources than can be helpful companions for your Bible reading this year.

Reader’s Bibles

1. ESV Single Column Legacy Bible. This is an ideal Bible for those wanting to read through Scripture at a steady pace. The text is laid out in a single column format, and section titles are placed in the margins, letting you move from passage to passage with minimal distractions. This is also a great edition for reading the Bible in its own context.

2. Literary Study Bible. Edited by Dr. Leland Ryken, this study edition is similar to the Single Column Legacy Bible in that the text is laid out in single column, paragraph format, with minimal distractions. The book introductions and interspersed study notes are designed to guide the user in a literary reading of the Bible. This is an excellent edition for reading through the Bible while taking special note of its literary features.

Devotional Books and Bibles

3. The One Year Bible®. The popular One Year Bible is available in the ESV translation. In this edition the text is broken up into select readings that are then compiled for each day. Readers who follow along throughout the year will work through the entire Bible.

4. Oswald Chambers Devotional Bible. The full ESV text is accompanied by 365 devotional excerpts of works by Oswald Chambers. Readers can glean insight and spiritual wisdom from the famous Scottish pastor throughout the year.

5. For the Love of God (Vols. 1 & 2). Using a slightly modified version of the famous M’Cheyne reading plan, D. A. Carson provides devotional commentary for readings assigned to each day of the year. Following the M’Cheyne reading plan and using For the Love of God as companion volumes, readers will work through the New Testament and Psalms twice and the rest of the Bible once.

Digital Resources

6. ESVBible.org. Users can sign up for a free account and gain access to 12 different reading plans. Each plan includes links to the pertinent passages and tracks your progress through the year. In addition, the reading plans integrate with all of ESVBible.org’s other features, including highlights, notes, and for-purchase study modules.

7. Downloadable Reading Plans. The ESVBible.org reading plans are also available for download on esv.org. Users can subscribe to the reading plans by RSS feed, email, iCal calendars, or print them off.

There are also tons of reading plans available on sites like YouVersion.com, Biblegateway.com, and many others. For other ideas, be sure to check out our previous post on 2012 book and Bible reading plans from a few weeks ago, as well as Justin Taylor’s post on reading plans for the new year.

Whether you use an established reading plan or follow your own strategy for reading the Bible, we want to encourage you to make this a year of immersion in God’s Word!

The Single Column Legacy Bible has just arrived in the Crossway warehouse and is starting to ship. We’re excited about this new edition for at least four reasons.

1. It features a fresh, new design. Every once in a while it’s fun to try new things, and with the Single Column Legacy Bible we started from scratch. It’s based off the Renaissance ideal for a perfect page (HT Robert Bringhurst), which means there’s a precise layout of the text and the margins – what Renaissance thinkers considered perfect proportions. Below is an example of the interior. You can also download a pdf sample.

2. We aimed for a high standard of excellence in production. This is one of the finest-quality Bibles we publish. Because of the nature of this project, we wanted to use select production materials and processes. The paper, binding, and printer were all carefully selected to ensure the quality of this edition.

3. It’s our first Bible that uses line-matching. Line-matching is a process that aligns the text on both sides of a page, minimizing the see-through of text. If you look at your current Bible, chances are you’ll notice slight deviations in how the text was placed on each page. This is because Bible printing presses run the paper at incredibly fast speeds, and it’s very difficult to get the text printed exactly the same on each page. Line-matching is a process that solves the problem and leads to a more visually appealing, readable edition.

4. It’s designed specifically for undistracted reading. Because we wanted this to be an ideal “reader’s Bible,” we chose a single-column format and opted to not include cross-references, introductions, or other special features (although there are maps and a concordance in the back). We also placed the section titles in the margin instead of in-line with the text. The result is an edition where the reader can move smoothly from passage to passage without jumping around or being distracted by added textual divisions.

You can read more about the Single Column Legacy Bible on its product page. It’s available in four covers: two TruTones, a genuine leather, and a top grain leather. We hope you check it out and are pleased with the results!

One of our primary goals at Crossway is to make the Bible as widely available as possible in all media forms, including e-books. With more and more people trying e-books these days, there’s been an explosion of e-reader devices of all shapes and sizes, for every budget. And within a week or so many will find their way under Christmas trees. You might be giving or receiving one yourself.

If you unwrap an e-reader this year, one of the first things you’ll want to do is start loading it with great content. Did you know the ESV Classic Reference Bible is available for free in every major e-book format?

Download the ESV Bible in the available formats from Crossway’s website, or purchase directly from your e-reader device.* Kindle users can also download the free ESV Bible or the ESV Study Bible ($9.99) directly from Amazon.com.

Whether you receive an e-reader for the first time this Christmas, or have been using one for a while, make sure you load it with the free ESV Bible.

Merry Christmas!

*Note—at the time of this post, due to a glitch in the Nook bookstore, the Nook edition of the ESV Bible was not available for free. Until the issue is resolved, we recommend downloading the ePub file from the Crossway website and installing it on your Nook reader.

*UPDATE: The Nook bookstore has fixed the glitch. The ESV Bible is now available for free.

Alpha and Omega by James MacMillan is a six-minute sacred choral piece set to the ESV text of Revelation 21:1-6a. “It is a beautiful passage…from the book of the apocalypse,” explains MacMillan. “It basically addresses Christ as the beginning and the end of everything.” MacMillan masterfully handles the ambiguities of a both apocalyptic and celebratory passage. “It is my principle priority in being a composer…to allow extremes to confront each other,” MacMillan says. “For the joyful and the terrifying to co-habit the same time-space.”

Alpha and Omega was commissioned by Soli Deo Gloria and sponsored by Crossway and the University of Chicago. The vision for the work originated with Dr. Lane Dennis, President and Publisher at Crossway, whose idea it was to partner with Soli Deo Gloria to commission a great contemporary musical work, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible.

On Friday December 16th, The Crossing @ Christmas will offer the East Coast premiere of Alpha and Omega by James MacMillan, in concert at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA. The Crossing is a choir in Philadelphia led by Donald Nally, conductor and chorus master. The piece will air on 90 public radio stations throughout December and will be available for commercial release in October 2012.

Tune in below to hear James MacMillan discuss the project:

With Christmas shopping it can be hard to know what to get your friends and family, especially if you’re looking for something that gives significant, lasting value.

If you think about it, a Bible is one of the most personal and valuable gifts you can give. Several of us at Crossway are still using Bibles that we were given years ago!

Consider giving the gift of God’s Word for Christmas. Here are 5 specialty Bibles that might bless someone in your family:

1. ESV Seek and Find Bible

This Bible for 5-9 year-olds features the full ESV text along with 120 illustrations of major Bible stories. Accompanying each illustration is a retelling of the Bible story in simpler language, reflection questions, memory verses, and other features. It’s a colorful Bible that helps kids work through the entire Bible in a way they can understand. The Seek and Find Bible is available in three editions and is priced at either $28 (hardcover) or $35 (TruTones).

2. ESV Grow! Bible

The ESV Grow! Bible is for kids ages 8–12. It also includes the full Bible text alongside numerous features like “W Questions”, “Cross Connections”, and “4U” applications. This colorful and engaging Bible is available in three editions, priced at $28 for the hardcover and $35 for the TruTones.

3. ESV Student Study Bible

Adapted from the original ESV Study Bible, the Student Study Bible includes condensed study notes, character profiles, special facts, articles, and more. It was designed for students, but features a depth of content and simple design applicable to all ages. Each copy of the Student Study Bible comes with free access to an online version hosted at ESVBible.org. It’s available in three print editions – $38 for the hardcover and $55 for the two TruTone editions.

4. ESV Study Bible

We’re excited to announce that, as a result of your partnership in our “Give Thanks, Give Bibles” campaign, Crossway will be sending nearly 400 Study Bibles to Christians in the Global South via Desiring God International Outreach!
by Joe Thorn on November 29, 2011 (original post here)

As a new Christian the Bible was entirely new to me. I didn’t know who the Apostle Paul was, nor well-known stories like that of of Cain and Able. So, I was hungry for the Scripture and read it fervently and frequently. For the first years of my Christian life I always had my bible. Of course I had a few Bibles, but my bible was the one I read and wrote in most of the time. (Here’s a peek at a page from the NIV Bible I was using as a young Christian in 1992.) By the late nineties I wound up just grabbing whatever Bible was close by. It didn’t matter which one I used since I kept all my notes in a journal. Well, maybe it’s just me but along the way I really missed having a special go-to Bible that was well-read and marked up.

In July 2006 Crossway released the ESV Journaling Bible featuring 2 inch ruled margins. I wanted one immediately, but wasn’t sure I would use it. After all, I am one of those Moleskine guys. Well, I finally purchased one this fall and just love it. For the first time in years I have my Bible again. For those who like to take notes in their bibles I think this is the best option around.

For a real review of the Bible you can check out Tony Reinke’s post from 2007 (while you’re at it, get his new book, Lit!). Here, I’m just going to tell you how I’ve been using those wide margins in the ESV Journaling Bible. I mean, you finally have a Bible with s p a c e. What do you use it for? I mostly do three things.

Using the Margins

1. Summation, Connection, and Implication.
I often write out a summation of certain truths, arguments, or passages that make things clear for me. Distilling things down to their essence helps me to see the big picture, or main point, and then return to the pieces. I also like to lay out some of the connections between the truth, promise, or command in the passage I am currently reading to truths, promises, etc. in other portions of Scripture. And, I also note some of the implications of those truths/passages I’m currently reading.

2. Cross references.
Some people won’t like that the ESV Journaling Bible doesn’t have cross refernces, but I like that I get to add my own. It forces me to work my brain (or a concordance), but then I add only the most relevant texts.

3. Quotes.
I’m even throwing helpful quotes from other writers/theologians when helpful to me or those I may wind up teaching.

An example.
Last week I was reading Proverbs 27 and verse 7 really caught my attention. “One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.” I used the margins to note that the rich forget their privileges, the comfortable forget their ease, but those who suffer savor even small graces. And, that I need to take note of my afflictions while savoring God’s present graces and gospel promises. Later I came across Matthew Henry’s comment on the passage and quoted him in the margin as well. He was explaining how the poor have a better relish of their enjoyments than the rich, and then wrote, “Hunger is the best sauce.”

Pen or Pencil?

If you’re going to mark this bad boy up, what will you use? I favor writing in this Bible with a pencil because I sometimes write down the wrong verse and would like to erase something rather than scratch it out. But I went onto Twitter last week and asked what people are using to write in their ESV Journaling Bible, and here are some of their answers.

Pigma Micron 005 (by Sakura)
Zebra F-301 0.7 mm Fine Point
Pilot Hi-Tec
Pilot G-2 0.38 Fine Point
Staedtler Mars Micro 775 Mechanical Pencil 0.5mm
Pentel 0.5mm pencil

Joe will be giving away a copy of the ESV Journaling Bible later this week. Check out his blog for details.

As a Christian publisher, we believe it’s our primary task to get the right resources into the right hands, all for the glory of God. We don’t always hear about the books and Bibles that end up with those who need them around the world, but it’s deeply encouraging when those stories make their way back to us.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely surrounded by a wealth of content that can grow your faith: books, specialty Bibles, websites, blogs, sermons, podcasts, conferences, and classes. This is certainly not the case everywhere in the world. Pastors in many areas faithfully disciple their congregations and share the gospel in their communities, all without access to any formal training or much in the way of printed resources. Yet the work they’re doing is critically important, and occasionally we’re able to find specific ways to support them in their ministry.

One such example is The Global Leadership Institute, an organization that provides training for African pastors and promotes church-planting in North and West Africa. Pastors attend two-week training seminars in Bo, Sierra Leone, each year for three years. Since GLI’s inception, Crossway has had the privilege of providing each pastor with an ESV Study Bible. Long-time readers of the blog may remember our first post on GLI in 2009.

In a very real sense, you’re partnering to make these sorts of initiatives possible anytime you buy a Crossway book or ESV Bible, or through our missional rewards program, Crossway Impact.

And this week, we wanted to create a fun way for you to join us in giving thanks and sharing with our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. We’re calling it simply “Give Thanks, Give Bibles.” This Thanksgiving week, for every “like” of Crossway’s Facebook page, we’ll put $1 towards distributing Bibles to Christians in the Global South.

Thanks for helping us spread the Word!
