Dear Friends of Crossway,

You may have recently heard from us about the flood at Crossway and its impact on our ministry. Last week, we reached out to ask for help at this challenging time, and we wanted to send this update on our progress.

Over 1200 people have responded to offer prayer and gifts of support. These gifts have enabled us to reach 53% of our goal, which was to raise $360,000 by May 31st so that we could pursue necessary repairs and maintain progress with key ministry initiatives. We’re humbled and encouraged by the Lord’s provision and the response so far, but still have a significant way to go.

Below is a message from our president, Lane Dennis, on the recovery needs:

As you may have heard, a flood recently swept through Crossway’s headquarters. About two feet of water poured into our 32 first-floor offices due to unrelenting rains. The damage was extensive and repairs and rebuilding will take five or six months. You can see the damage here in this video.

More important, however, is the impact this could have on major ministry projects that we have planned.

As a not-for-profit ministry, Crossway is not only committed to publishing the ESV Bible and gospel-centered content, but also to providing God’s Word to hundreds of thousands of people overseas, either free or at a substantially reduced cost. Because of the recent flood, however, some of these international ministry efforts are now at risk.

That’s why mails rioting to you — first, to ask for your prayers at this critical moment; and, second, to ask (if the Lord should lead you) for a gift of support. Your gift will help us cover three things: (1) the portion of the damage not covered by insurance, and (2) the installation of new safeguards to flood-proof our building. But most importantly (3) your gift will help ensure that crucial Bible ministry projects can continue to advance.

I would be deeply grateful to you if you are able to help us at this critical time. Specifically, we need your help to raise $360,000 by the end of our fiscal year, May 31st. Your support will make it possible especially for us to continue moving forward with the following priority projects:

• Translation costs for the ESV Chinese Study Bible, to be published in Mainland China
• Printing costs for 60,000 copies of the Chinese-English ESV bi-lingual Bible, also for publication and distribution in Mainland China
• Completion and global distribution of the ESV Gospel Transformation Bible this fall
• Development of the Knowing the Bible studies, to be offered free digitally worldwide

Though we don’t know exactly how the Lord will use these events for his kingdom and for his glory, we are confident in his grace and mercy and in his gracious provision for the work he has called us to do – trusting his words in Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.”

On Syncing with ESV Mobile Apps…

Please note that implementing syncing of notes and reading plans between ESVBible.org and the ESV mobile apps will be carefully rolled out in multiple phases in the coming months. We know this is a common feature request many of you have been patiently waiting for. While we can’t provide a definitive timeline, we can tell you the plan is to first provide syncing integration with a new Global Study Bible mobile app, and then integration with the other ESV mobile apps in the early months of 2013.

Today we’re sharing three hopes that we have for the GSB:

1. That the Global Study Bible will equip the global church in an unprecedented way. 

The Global Study Bible is a significant, one-volume study tool for Christians around the world. The study notes, adapted from the award-winning ESV Study Bible, are more concise and edited for those who speak English as a second language. Our aim was to present the material in an accessible format while maintaining a high level of biblical scholarship and insight.

We also worked from the beginning to ensure quality production and affordability. The interior is printed in two colors and all three editions feature a sewn binding.

We want as many Christians as possible to be able to afford their own copy, and for that copy to be used for years.

2. That Christians in North America will gain a global perspective on Scripture.

The GSB has several features that will help Christians read the Bible from a worldwide perspective. The global message of each book identifies major themes and applies them to a range of global issues. Similarly, the Global Study Bible contains articles written by a team of international contributors. These articles address topics ranging from the reliability and authority of Scripture to world religions and missions.

If you’re reading this right now you probably have convenient access to a variety of biblical and theological resources. Yet many of us still have so much to learn about what God wants to accomplish around the world through his Word.

3. That Christians will partner together to serve the global church.

One of our deep hopes for the Global Study Bible is to see Christians coming together to serve the worldwide church through the distribution of God’s Word. One way we’re facilitating this is through a Buy One, Give One campaign. For every copy of the GSB purchased in North America, free digital access to the complete GSB content will be provided to a person in need. Everyone who buys the GSB is thus helping to make God’s Word and these study tools available to their international brothers and sisters.

We’ll also be making the Global Study Bible available at a discounted rate for bulk orders. We hope people traveling oversees or going on missions trips will consider bringing GSBs with them to distribute to those they are serving.

Our prayer is that God would use the Global Study Bible for his glory, and that through it, the church would be equipped to know and do his will on earth.
