Interview: Thinking Rightly About Adoption & Caring for Orphans

Russell Moore, dean of the School of Theology at Southern Seminary and author of Adopted for Life, speaks with Dennis Rainy and Bob Lepine on FamilyLife Today about thinking rightly about adoption and caring for the needs of orphans. Tune in to their three segments below:

  1. Grappling with Infertility? Could God be leading you to adoption? Moore talks honestly about his family’s struggle with infertility and recalls the precious moment when he opened his heart and mind to the idea of adoption.
  2. Embracing Adoption: Does God want to bless your life through adoption? Moore fondly remembers the days when he and his wife waited for a word from their adoption agency to go pick up their sons. He describes the orphanage in Russia where his sons lived and the emotions they felt as they prepared the boys to travel to their new home in the United States.
  3. Welcome to the Family: Adoption is close to the heart of God. Moore, father of two adopted sons talks about the challenges of adapting his adopted children to their new life and the blessings they’ve seen since expanding their family through adoption.

Free Crossway Audiobook: Adopted for Life

I haven’t listened to a lot of audiobooks. I figured they’re great for people with longer commutes, and therefore weren’t for me.

A few months ago I found myself driving from Colorado to Illinois — a trip that took nearly 20 hours. During that time, I listened to a lot of music. But I also enjoyed John Piper’s Think and Dave Harvey’s Rescuing Ambition. No, I didn’t have the paperbacks resting against the steering wheel; I listened to audiobooks that I downloaded onto my iPhone.

Now I’m a big fan of audiobooks, how convenient and engaging they are, and how they free me up to either keep my eyes on the road (if I’m driving) or keep my eyes closed (if I’m not driving).

Maybe you’re like I was, uncertain whether audiobooks are for you. You’re open to giving them a chance, as long as the bar isn’t set too high. This month, we’re working with our friends at christianaudio to offer our popular title, Adopted for Life by Russell D. Moore, as a free download. You can read more about this “paradigm shifting” book on Justin Taylor’s blog.

Why wait? The download is free, and you’ll have the entire 7-hour, unabridged version of the book within earshot within a few minutes. Give it a listen, and then let us know what you think of audiobooks in general, and this audiobook in particular.

Adoption in Action—The Real Stories.

It’s one thing to read a book. It’s another thing to see how God works through a book to mobilize the church into action. Thanks for joining us for a few adoption stories this week!

If you’re interested in hearing more, check these videos out on Vimeo:

  • Josh and Jen Fillpot’s story: “Adoption is not just some charitable thing we do, but adoption is war. We are fighting against principalities and powers and rulers of this darkness. By adopting we are saying that Christ is greater, and Christ will conquer, we can be adopted into his family, and have eternal life.”
  • Adam and Andi Greg’s story: “What lead us to become foster parents was in the local newspaper…they ran a story about how the state of Kentucky led the nation in children that were neglected and abused and that just really struck my heart. To bring a child out of poverty into relative prosperity is not enough for the church of Jesus Christ.”
  • John-Mark and Karen Hutcheson’s Story: “It was [Adopted for Life] a real example for me of a family that walked through the adoption process with Christ being the focal point of adoption.”
  • Ken and Sarah Lovett’s Story: “Adoption is a clear picture of the gospel.”

Adoption, God’s Provision, and the Gospel

In Adopted for Life, author Russell Moore did more than just communicate information about adoption. His book is a commission to churches and believers to be more than spectators. It’s a great-commission issue. It’s a battle for the souls of the lost. It’s a call to God’s people to get involved.

Continue with us this week as we’re hearing stories of those stepping up to the front lines of adoption.

“One thing [Russell Moore] talks about in his book is, the more gospel-centered we become, the more of a burden for orphans we will have. And the more adoption-friendly our churches become, the more we’ll understand about the gospel.”

Rocky and Susanne Clark share their story about God’s love, provision, and adoption:
