The Power of God

For my own devotional life I have recently been enjoying the book of Romans in our new translation, the ESV, and was particularly struck by the familiar words of Romans 1:16-17. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’”

Paul’s words here recall Jesus’ words in Mark 8:38: “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Each of us must be committed to sharing the Good News and must be bold with the words of Jesus that embody the gospel message.

What is the gospel? The word means “good news”—the preaching concerning Jesus Christ’s death, resurrection from the dead, and His ultimate exaltation. This is the message we want to provide through our gospel literature—this is the great news that we must boldly proclaim to this sinful world!

Will you join with me today as together we renew our commitment to God’s powerful, life-transforming gospel message? In Jesus’ own words, “Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest” (John 4:35).
