Faithfully Speak the Word
I am amazed and humbled by the fact that God has entrusted us, His children, with His Word. Think about it for a moment. In the Scriptures we have the very words of the God who created the universe with a word. We don’t need to wait for a prophet to speak God’s Word to us, as in Old Testament times, but instead have immediate and direct access to God’s message for us, His people, and for the world. This is one reason it is so important that we use a Bible translation that is faithful to the words themselves, not just to the general thoughts. For if we are to obey the command in Jeremiah to, “let him who has my word speak my word faithfully” (Jeremiah 23:28b, ESV), we must have confidence that we are accurately speaking God’s words.
Since we have such direct access to the very words of God, our Father, we need to spend intimate, consistent time with God in His Word. As my former pastor, R. Kent Hughes, so aptly asked, “How can we be profoundly impacted by that which we do not know?” Do you want God’s Word to impact your life? Spend time with your Father in His Word. Do you want the gospel message to go forth with power? Spend time in prayer with your Father in His Word. I pray that each of us would be like the church of Berea who “received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11b, ESV).
