Vern Poythress Answers Modern Challenges to the Inerrancy of Scripture

Wheaton IL—“Many people—even people who would call themselves Christians—have difficulties with the Bible,” writes Dr. Vern Poythress, author of Inerrancy and Worldview. The culture at large portrays God as a distant and impersonal force, only mildly interested in humans’ day-to-day lives. This modern perspective opposes the biblical understanding of fundamental issues like the nature of humanity, evil, and the purpose of life.

Inerrancy and Worldview offers the first worldview-based defense of scriptural inerrancy, showing how worldview differences are often the cause of perceived difficulties with the Bible. In making a positive case for biblical inerrancy, Poythress interacts with the arguments of theologians like Enns, Sparks, Allert, and McGowan, making an important contribution to the controversial conversation on biblical inerrancy.

Poythress, who has researched and published in a variety of fields—including science, linguistics, and sociology—deals skillfully with the challenges presented in each of these disciplines in his book. Addressing key examples in each field, Poythress shows that many difficulties can be resolved by exposing the influence of modern materialism.

Counselor Addresses Root of Tragic Condition of American Marriages

Wheaton IL—One of the greatest social tragedies of our day is the under-performance of marriage—not only marriages that end in divorce, but also those that, while staying intact, become painfully strained and emotionally scarred.

Counselor Tim Savage recognizes that the how-to-quick-fix your marriage solutions are under-performing as much as marriage itself. “Marital disunity is not just a psychological problem, but a theological problem,” Savage explains. In his new book No Ordinary Marriage, Savage doesn’t skip to practical marriage tips, but first addresses the underlying problem of the human heart that lies at the root of failing marriages.

Savage challenges readers to realize the immense potential and hope that God has purposed for their marriage. He takes the seemingly abstract concept of God’s glory and shows how that glory can infuse marriage unions, increase joy, and redeem marriages as a testimony to an on-looking world.

With Marriage & the Family Under Siege, Köstenberger and Jones Offer a Biblical Defense

Wheaton IL—“It can rightly be said that marriage and the family are institutions under siege in our world today,” write Köstenberger and Jones, and that “with marriage and the family at risk, our very civilization is in crisis.” The recent rulings on gay marriage and debates on family-related issues have placed marriage and family at the forefront of the public eye. More so than at any point in history, we are now confronted with the need to carefully define the meaning of marriage and family. To that end, Professor Andreas Köstenberger and ethics expert David W. Jones speak to issues such as:

Abortion

Contraception

Infertility

Adoption

Homosexuality

Divorce

Unlike many popular books on the market today, Marriage and the Family is unique in that it surveys every major passage about marriage in the canon of Scripture, both the Old and New Testaments. From this vantage point, Köstenberger and Jones are able to offer more than mere opinions, but instead present readers with scientific and biblical facts that provide authoritative and timeless answers to questions we face today.

Marriage and Family: Biblical Essentials presents a Christian theology of marriage and parenting and points the way to the spiritual solution to our culture’s confusion: a return to, and rebuilding of, the biblical foundation of marriage and the family.

April 26, 2012 (Wheaton, IL)—Coinciding with Dr. Leland Ryken’s seventieth birthday and in honor of his life’s work, Crossway is pleased present him with Liberal Arts for the Christian Life. This book celebrates Dr. Ryken’s contributions to Christian higher education and the life of the Christian mind. Ryken’s scholarship and commitment to integrating faith with learning in the classroom have influenced thousands of students in his more than 40 years at Wheaton College.

It is all too common for college students to lack a clear vision for their education. Liberal Arts and the Christian Life presents a purposeful alternative, encouraging students to pursue a better understanding of Christ-centered liberal arts. Contributors including Philip Ryken, Jeffry Davis, Duane Litfin, John Walford, Alan Jacobs, and Jim Wilhoit show how the liberal arts can shape and equip students for a lifetime of learning and service as they wait for the coming of Christ.

Five sections explore the background of a Christian liberal arts education, its theological basis, habits and virtues, differing approaches, and ultimate aims. Also included are a transcript of a well-known 1984 chapel talk delivered by Leland Ryken on the student’s calling and practical chapters on how to read, write, and speak well.

I Grew Up Going to Church, but…

Matt Chandler’s Debut Book Sheds Light on the Gospel You Thought You Knew

Wheaton IL—You think you have heard it, but then again, maybe you haven’t. Most Americans recognize the name of Jesus. Less than most go to church. And even less have heard the gospel explicitly. Many believe that Christianity is ultimately about being good and avoiding bad. And the church is for those good church-going people.

Chandler serves as a lead pastor in Flower Mound, TX at The Village Church where he has heard testimony after testimony from his congregation, noticing one predominant theme—they grew up in the church, but never understood the gospel.

In a climate where the gospel tends to be largely assumed, neglected, or undefined— The Explicit Gospel seeks to do justice to the earth-shaking pronouncement that God has a redemptive plan in Jesus that is not dependent on our behavior. It’s both a personal plan of love, sacrifice, grace, and eternal life for sinners as well as a big picture redemptive plan in which a supreme Christ is making all things new.

Evangelicalism is in Trouble

Svigel Looks to a Retro Faith to Diagnose American Christianity

Wheaton IL—Evangelicalism is in trouble. Surveying the modern evangelical landscape, professor Michael Svigel asks, “Why does evangelicalism appear to be spinning out of control, losing appeal to younger generations, dwindling in numbers, or selling out to pop culture to muster a crowd?” He seeks to answer this question by looking to the past—to a retro Christianity.

What are we sacrificing in our churches in the name of “relevance”? Is it really working? RetroChristianity is a summons to begin thinking both critically and constructively about history. It is a call to evangelicals to know how the past informs our present beliefs, values, and practices. “Arguing that the way forward is to draw on the wisdom of the whole Christian past, RetroChristianity not only points out the trailhead of the biblical, historical, and theological path, but supplies provisions for the journey without forsaking the healthy developments that have benefited Christians along the way,” writes Svigel.

Svigel defines evangelicalism, provides an overview of church history, and recommends which elements are essential for a local church in an effort to make us “better evangelicals, not former evangelicals.”

Where Biblical Doctrine Meets the Daily Grind

Author Lydia Brownback Points Readers to the Lord of All Our Practicalities

Wheaton IL—What informs our habits and choices? Whether we look to culture, friends, or the latest magazine in the grocery store, our thoughts and behaviors are inevitably shaped by something. We’re drawn to practical advice and 3-step formulas to address life’s problems and circumstances, but relying on cultural sources alone eventually leads to unwise ideas and unbiblical decisions.

Author Lydia Brownback has noticed the tendency to turn toward these quick fixes before seeking the wisdom that God himself provides. A Woman’s Wisdom challenges women to seek wisdom from a source more reliable than what the world is capable of offering. “The world celebrates sin and folly,” Brownback explains. “But the more we soak ourselves in God’s Word, the more we will be able to readily lay hold of the wisdom we need for a particular circumstance.”

Using the book of Proverbs, where wisdom and folly are displayed in stark contrast, she draws relevant principles that guide women to consider how they speak, cultivate friendships, exercise self-control, safeguard their sexuality, and evaluate their thoughts, feelings, and desires.

“Women need practical advice for life, but even more we need hearts set on the one who governs all our practicalities,” says Brownback. As we learn what it truly means to fear him, to know him, and to love him, we will find ourselves equipped with every “how-to” we need.

Do Actions Speak Louder Than Words?

Litfin Addresses the Tension Between Gospel Proclamation and Gospel Deeds

Wheaton IL—The Bible teaches that the church is called to a balanced ministry of both preaching the gospel in words and showing it with deeds. Yet the church struggles to find and maintain this balance. Today some are emphasizing deeds at the expense of words, while others hold fast to “talking” and forsake the doing.

At the helm of a leading Christian college for years, Duane Litfin has had a first- hand look at the issues students and alumni are talking about. Christians are eager to debate the importance of social justice and evangelism perhaps more than ever before.

In his new book, Word Versus Deed, Litfin seeks to level the balance. He steers the conversation toward the biblical harmony of word and deed, pointing out the church’s tendency to overcorrect—either cutting out the preaching of the gospel or forgetting the application of action.

“The gospel is inherently a verbal thing, and evangelism is inherently a verbal behavior,” Litfin explains. “But giving verbal witness to the gospel does not exhaust the church’s mission.”

An elder statesmen in the church, Litfin’s training in communication theory and in detailed exegesis is brought to bear on this important subject, bringing verbal proclamation in sync with the witness of one’s actions.
