On Being a Writer, On Being a Christian (Video)

Why do you write?

How do you start writing professionally?

How do you bring the integrity of Christ to everything you do?

For acclaimed novelist Bret Lott, writing as a Christian necessitates bravery—bravery to look the world square in the eye with the unflinching eye of Christ, refusing to fit into the popular mold or forego quality for the sake of acceptance.

We invite you to watch this short and compelling video as Bret answers common questions about writing, shares about his life as writer, and talks briefly about his forthcoming book, Letters and Life: On Being a Writer, On Being a Christian (June, 2013).

Learn more about the book.

  1. I hope every aspiring writer reads Brett Lott’s new book. When I was in an empty dorm trying to decide whether to go on to grad school, I ran across Lott’s essay “Before We Get Started” and started nonchalantly reading, when I got to the Ezekiel 37 passage I was completely undone. The passage had been one I’d hung onto for years believing God would breath life in my “dry bones.” That passage so unexpected in the middle of his essay gave me my answer and I went on and earned my Masters in Creative Writing. Lott is correct, writing is up to the writer. You have to sit alone with words! I can’t wait to read the whole thing.
