Tract Writing Guidelines
Length
Each tract should be between 650 and 800 words long.
Know Your Reader
Put yourself in the place of the reader.
- What are his or her interests and beliefs?
- What are his felt needs and problems?
- Does he already understand the Gospel?
Capture the Reader’s Attention
Your title and opening paragraph are crucial. Here are a few types of openings that we have found successful:
- Real-life illustrations. Everyone likes a human-interest story, especially a personal account.
- Direct appeal to the reader’s felt needs. Are they lonely or insecure about the future? Are they looking for meaning to life? Of course there are other needs, but everyone wants acceptance, friendship, security, and meaning.
- Pose a question or raise an issue. Even though our society is increasingly secular, many people would like answers to some basic questions about life.
Weave in the Gospel
Now that you have the reader’s attention, transition smoothly into the heart of your message. Be creative in your approach while presenting these essential components:
- God’s holiness and love
- Man’s sinfulness and the consequence of that sin
- Jesus Christ’s payment for sin and victory over death
- Our need to personally believe in Christ for salvation
Motivate Toward a Decision
A Gospel tract is an evangelistic tool through which a reader should come to understand the need to receive Christ. Including an invitation and a ”sinner’s prayer“ is often an effective way to accomplish this. Close the tract with an invitation appropriate to the audience. Sometimes a brief invitation and an appropriate verse is sufficient. Other audiences require a thorough explanation of how to receive Christ.
