Challenges of the Teen Years
Being a teenager can be difficult. For one, you have tremendous cultural pressure coming from all sorts of directions: media, school, the internet. Young people are convinced that they need to do certain things, act a certain way, dress a certain way, post certain things on social media, believe certain things. We’re getting a 24/7 stream telling us This is what you need to do to live the good life.
There’s also a fear of the unknown which creates a general anxiety. There’s this myth that some young people believe that they’re invincible and thus, they have no fear in life. But, a lot of young people find the future very overwhelming and terrifying because they have no idea what it holds, and that can almost loom over them. There’s a difficulty of being so unsure of what the future holds.
Thirdly, there are unique temptations involved in being a young person. Two of the biggest perhaps are sexual temptations and digital temptations. They come from outside and they come from within in our hearts. In this moment of our lives, there are great gifts and joys, but there are also a lot of difficulties. Being aware of these difficulties gives us the path to be able to experience true joy as a young person.
