Why Would God Love Me When He Knows How Sinful I Am?

God’s Great Love

Why would God ever love me, knowing how sinful I am? Well, of course, that’s what makes the love of God so astounding—it is not repelled by our sins or our failures. We read in Psalm 103 that it’s precisely because God knows that we are frail and we are made of dust that he chooses to have compassion on us and love us like a father loves.

So there’s no way that we could ever live a life that is so perfect and so rid and devoid of sin that somehow we could earn or merit God’s love and his affection. The greatness of God’s love is precisely seen in the way that he showers it down on those who deserve only judgment and hell. That’s what makes God so marvelous. John says it in 1 John 3:1: “How great is the love of God?”

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

Sam Storms

The Steadfast Love of the Lord explores Scripture to find a clear picture of what God’s steadfast, unfailing love looks like and how, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, believers experience his affection.

Hear that coming from an elderly man toward the end of his life, still amazed by the magnitude of God’s love. How great is the love of God that we are his children? So again, we must never allow the reality of our sin, which all of us have, to diminish our understanding of and our enjoyment of the fact that God says to us, I love you anyway. In fact, Romans 5 tells us it was while we were yet sinners—while we were still God’s enemies—that he loved us and gave his Son to die for us.
