UPDATE: As of May 1, 2026, a generous donor has agreed to match gifts dollar-for-dollar, up to $200,000. This means that the impact of every $35 gift instantly doubles, allowing us to deliver 20 Bibles! Would you prayerfully consider joining us in this effort to provide the Word of God to those who do not yet have one? When you give, 100% of your gift goes directly toward Bible distribution.

The Global Need

It is estimated that between one-half to two-thirds1 of the world’s current Christian population lives in the Global South. As the church continues to grow in this region, so does its need for Bibles and gospel-rich resources. Although the majority of the world’s Christian population has shifted to Africa and Asia, most of the world’s Bibles and Christian resources remain concentrated in the Global North and West—leaving millions without access to the life-transforming beauty of God’s Word.

What’s more, nearly 90% of the world’s youth—which amounts to two billion children—live in the Global South. Of these, too many are unable to obtain a copy of Scripture and are left without a way to discover the wonder of God’s truth for themselves. Through Crossway’s One Million Bibles Initiative: Global South, we hope to give men, women, and children an opportunity to own the treasure of God’s Word.

Evidence of the Impact

Cecilia serves as an Awana program director and one of the teachers at Ruiru Bible Baptist Church in Nairobi, Kenya. Last year, through the generosity of Crossway’s donors to our previous One Million Bibles Initiative, boys and girls in this Awana program received Bibles. She shared how she has seen many lives changed as a result.

Before we received the [donated Bibles]—maybe eight or nine kids would have to share one Bible. So as a teacher you would have to write the verses on the whiteboard using the one shared Bible, then take the Bible to someone else to write on their whiteboard. But now every child has a Bible. So when the teacher says something like, “Somebody open to John 3:16,” everyone jumps to open their Bible and races to get there first. The Bibles are having a very big impact as they get to read the text for themselves.

Cecilia has also seen a ripple effect of transformation through the donated Bibles. The children are impacting their peers as well as their parents.

Through those Bibles, kids are getting other kids to the church. [They are saying], “In our church we are given the Bible. Look at the Bible.” They are even taking them to school and using them at school. Kids are coming [to church] because of those Bibles. The parents are coming asking for the Bibles. And we have seen change. Even this Sunday, there was a boy who came and told me his mother was sitting there. I had never seen that mother in church before.

Crossway remains committed to providing one million Bibles to the growing church in the Global South. Cecilia sums up the impact this way: “Through those Bibles, the lives of people are being transformed. And people are getting to know Jesus and getting to know the Bible better. When you read it yourself, it is better.”

Respond to the Need

We rejoice in the opportunity for Cecilia and those in her ministry to receive Bibles. As we give thanks, we recognize that many in other communities long to own one. Thanks to a generous donor match, through May 31, 2026, a $35 gift will help provide 20 Bibles to men, women, and children in great need throughout the Global South. Your gift will help us reach our goal of raising enough funds to support the printing and distribution of one million Bibles throughout the Global South.

As always, 100% of your donation goes directly toward Bible distribution, ensuring the maximum reach of your generosity.

Would you prayerfully consider joining us in this effort to provide the Word of God to those who need it most?

A New Kind of Armor: Bibles Reach the Zambian Army

God has called Cosmas Kaimba to serve in a unique place for the Kingdom. He has been a chaplain in the Zambia Defense Force for over twelve years. He fights for the spiritual well-being of the soldiers as they fight for and protect their country.

Greater Than What Money Can Buy: God's Word Is for Eternity

Throughout developing countries, churches face a similar problem: their pastors haven’t received theological training. Why is this important? Because without it, pastors are at risk of misunderstanding God’s Word and therefore inaccurately preaching to their congregations. Edwine Omaya provides a case study for why this often happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of Bibles are being distributed as part of this campaign?

All of the Bibles currently being distributed are ESV English-language Bibles, some with the Bible text only and others with study notes or additional content.

Are there other ways I can give to this initiative (e.g., wire transfer, cash, stocks, etc.)?

Crossway provides a number of ways for supporters to give to this initiative. You may donate gifts of stock, gifts designated from donor-advised funds, and estate gifts, among others. If you have questions regarding Crossway’s ability to receive your donation, visit this page to learn more or contact us at donate@crossway.org.

How much of my donation will go toward Bible distribution?

100% of your gift will be used for the specific purpose of funding the distribution of one million Bibles, with Crossway covering all administrative costs.

How is the cost of a Bible being determined?

While we initially anticipated that each Bible would cost approximately $3.50, including the costs of printing and delivery to each location, we have since been able to reduce those costs. We constantly monitor production and shipping realities, knowing that the costs may change based on a variety of factors.

The progress bar shown at the top of the One Million Bibles home page reflects the cost of $3.50 per Bible. We pray that the costs will remain lower than expected, so that more Bibles may be distributed for the same cost.

How does Crossway choose the recipients of these Bibles?

Crossway has a large number of close ministry partnerships throughout the Global South, and will deliver many of these Bibles into the hands of recipients through these trusted networks. We will focus on the areas of the Global South which we and our ministry partners have identified as having the greatest immediate need.

What countries or parts of the world will receive Bibles through this initiative?

We anticipate distribution in dozens of English-speaking countries and territories throughout the Global South, including Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia.

Why physical Bibles? Can’t people access Scripture on their phones or online?

We recognize the value of both digital and print Bibles and work to distribute both wherever possible. Crossway freely offers the ESV text on our website and app, so that anyone around the world with sufficient access can read the ESV Bible on their personal device. However, the reality is that internet connectivity and smartphone usage are not reliable, widespread, or affordable in much of the developing world and among the people we are trying to reach through this initiative. While it’s true that smartphone and internet access have increased in developing countries in the last ten years, there is still a large gap between access and actual usage. In 2021, 78% of the total population in sub-Saharan Africa and 66% of the population in South Asia were not able to functionally access mobile internet.

A physical Bible, however, bridges this “digital divide” by granting its recipient immediate access to Scripture—no internet, data, or smartphone required. With these current global realities, we have made it our mission as part of this initiative to provide direct access to Scripture in physical form to many who haven’t had it before.
