Why the Book of 1 Peter Is Utterly Relevant Today
Exiles in the World
Peter is utterly relevant for today. Peter’s epistles have so much to say to us about the world we live in right now. He was writing to people he calls “exiles.” They were shut out from mainstream society by their faith. They were scorned and sometimes really persecuted for their faith. And while that may not be the case for all of us, we are exiles in the sense that as believers, we don’t live by this world’s system.
In that sense, we are shut out. And Peter encourages us, even when we suffer, to persevere and recognize the fact that we’re pilgrims on the way home. We are not home yet, and so we’re going to feel a sense of homesickness. Every bit of homesickness we feel in our real day-to-day lives is just really a hunger and taste for our true home in heaven.
