What’s the secret to victory?
It takes more than talent to win the game, more than skill to post the top score. So what gives some athletes the winning edge? What makes the difference between the best—and the rest?
Direction: Their eyes are focused on the prize!
Discipline: They make sacrifices and commit to the course.
Diligence: They practice for as long as it takes; they perfect their technique.
Determination: They don’t give up; they don’t give in. They know the goal is within their grasp!
These are the qualities that set the top players apart, the characteristics that will give an athlete the winning edge. And with these qualities, you can find success in every area of your life. But first you have to get in the game.
Time out!
The Bible tells us we’ve all been disqualified, right from the start. We’ve all broken the rules. Ignored the Coach, fouled other players, strayed out of bounds. God calls this sin (Romans 3:23).
The penalty is way more serious than a fine or suspension. Sin leads to death—eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23).
But God showed us mercy. He sent a substitute to take our place.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Jesus played by all the rules. He lived a perfect and sinless life. Then He willingly laid down His life and died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. The Bible tells us that He snatched victory from defeat: He triumphed over death and hell. He rose from the dead and lives forevermore. When we put our faith in Jesus— when we choose to believe in Him—He wipes our record clean. Now God welcomes us into His family, onto His team.
How do I sign up?
If you’d like to be a part of God’s team—if you’d like to share in Jesus’ victory and begin your own personal relationship with Him—pray something like this:
Dear God, I realize that I have missed the mark— I’ve been way out of bounds. I’m a sinner in need of a Savior. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to pay the penalty for me. Please forgive me and help me to play by Your rules. I want to live my life in a way that brings glory to You. Amen.
