What Should I Do with My Doubts? 3 Suggestions
Advice for Dealing with Doubt
When someone has doubts in the Christian life, one of the things I remind them of is that it’s a very normal thing to have doubts. Christians have had doubts for generations. The Bible’s filled with people who doubted. Some of the most famous Christians we know of had serious moments of doubt. Martin Luther was famous for his doubting. Spurgeon had moments of crises of faith. The real question, though, is, What do you do when you have those doubts? What steps should a Christian take?
There are a number of steps that a Christian should take. The first thing to do when you have doubt is to recognize that you should not go it alone. When believers are doubting, they may be tempted to isolate themselves, like a wounded animal, and go off in the corner and be by yourself.

But that’s where doubts flourish. Doubts grow in darkness and they grow in isolation. So, the first thing I would encourage someone to do is to bring out your doubts to a confident friend or to a trusted Christian friend who is a Christian and can give you counsel, encouragement, and prayer. In other words, don’t stay alone in the dark, but be out in a group in the light.
I call this my “horror movie advice,” which is don’t make the mistake people make in horror movies. The protagonist always makes the same mistake: they go off alone in the dark. You yell at the TV, “Don’t do it!” But they do it anyway, and that’s the path of trouble. The same is true in the Christian life. If you’re having doubts, don’t go off alone in the dark. Stay in the group, stay in the light is step number one.
The second thing I would say about someone who struggles with doubts is to recognize that those doubts almost certainly have been answered before in the history of the church. People often think that they’re the only one who struggles with this, that no one has ever asked this question before, that no one has ever wondered about these things before.

Michael J. Kruger
Writing in the form of a letter to his college-age daughter, Michael Kruger’s Surviving Religion 101 takes a topical approach to examining some of the toughest questions Christian students encounter at secular universities.
I can assure you that’s not the case. Almost anything you possibly could come up with in your mind or anything you’ve heard from the outside has been addressed and answered before. In other words, be on a quest to find the answers to your questions. There are answers out there. Don’t confuse you not having an answer with there not being an answer. Take those steps to do the hard work to pursue the answer. And when you do, I think you’ll recognize that there are really good answers to your questions that can allay those doubts in the Christian life.
The third and final thing is to just be patient. One of the things that we struggle with in life, generally, is that we want quick fixes for everything. If something doesn’t go away right away, we think we’re doing something wrong. That’s not true. Some people are going to struggle with doubt and questions their whole life. They may have a nagging thing that’s just part of the burden they have to bear, or they may just struggle with certain things. That may be the path that God has for you. But don’t think that means there’s something wrong with you. Be patient. Trust in him. Look to the truth, look to the resources that God has given you, and you’ll find over time that God is going to reassure you that his Word is true and that he is true.
